We are returning to Paris for a long weekend in July with the intention of taking in the sights and atmosphere of this wonderful city on foot. Using suggestions from this forum previously, we took the advice to take in a stroll along the banks of the Seine and then Le Marais. It was a lovely experience. We need fresh suggestions for more walks over 2 days. We are interested in all aspects of the city.Thank you.
John

- The 19th century arcades all over in the center of Paris.
- Jardin des Plantes
- Canal Saint Martin, especially near the rue Beaurepaire part.
- Butte Montmartre: around avenue Junot, villa Léandre, allée des brouillard, rue des 3 Frèes, rue Gabrielle, the Bateau Lavoir square, rue Durantin…
- Don't go to place du Tertre.
- For that matter, don't go to Champs Elysées.
Bon voyage.

I was recently in Paris for a week and while there, went on several Paris Walks. I highly recommend them as a way to see fascinating parts of the city with well-informed, interesting guides at a reasonable price (only 10 euros per person per tour). Their website is www.paris-walks.com. Enjoy!

Hi John!

Have you and your wife spent time in the 6th? Last September we took a lovely walk through the gorgeous Luxembourg Gardens, along Blvd. St. Michel, and another day, up to the Pantheon. One night we had a very tasty dinner at Le Petit Prince in the nearby 5th.

Kim had a book that laid out a walking tour with good descriptiongs of the area -- I'll ask her to post its name.

You might also want to check with Paris Greeters, which is staffed by volunteers and is free. Here is a recent report from a visitor; we also had a great experience with a Paris Greeter last year.

I strongly second Americana's suggestions. The passages are amazing. I spent 6 weeks in Paris last summer and walked to many wonderful places. Another suggestion is the Promenade Plantee, which if you want you can walk from the beginning near the new Paris Opera to the Bois de Vincennes. If you want guided walks in English, the Paris Walks company has good ones.

Okay the book Colleen mentioned is Paris Walks by Sonia, Alison and Rebecca Landes.

We used it for one walk through the Latin Quarter and really enjoyed it. Chris also used the book and talks about it in her blog, Day 18: Walking tour of Saint Germain des Prés

We used Gilles Desmons' Walking Paris to self guide Isle St. Louis one day and the Galleries/Arcades another. It also has a good-looking walk in Montmarte and many more. The amount of detail is incredible.

If you're going to self guide, get either the Michelin Paris Plan or the Plan de Paris discussed in this thread Just in case.

Thanks!

Maybe easier than packing a book around, is the Paris City Walks deck of cards (a bit larger than a playing card, maybe 1 1/2 times larger) City Walks Paris. Each card has a suggested route and highlights and a map on the opposite side. You can carry just one card at a time.

Just a thought!

Many thanks again... I'll be checking out the suggestions both online and in the bookshop. I feel confident that we are in for more treats.. Pity about the £/Euro exchange rate... ouch!
