We have an Australian friend flying into Madrid arriving 9.45 pm mid May and then taking the train to Malaga the following day.

We have not yet made it to Madrid so would like advice on the best options for him for a hotel that evening. Probably a major consideration is how far the airport is from the train station. Is there more than one station perhaps? I assume the train station is closer to central Madrid than the airport.

Any advice and specific hotel recommendations are appreciated - 3 star would be fine.

Hi Eliza,
Madrid airport is North-East of the city and the Atocha train station (from which the new high speed AVE service to Malaga leaves) is in central Madrid. There is an excellent Metro service into the centre from all the airport terminals including the magnificent new Terminal 4 and this takes abouut half an hour into the city centre.
A great and reasonably priced Hotel is the Abalu Hotel - near to Noviciados metro station (thus easy to get to from the airport) and this would be a short taxi ride to Atocha the next morning for your friend.

Alternatively, he could take an airport Hotel on arrival and get the Metro to Atocha the next morning but it seems sad not to spend a night in the wonderful city centre.

Hi Michael

Thank you so much for that information - it was exactly what I wanted and we have passed it on to our friend.

I am hoping I might have some more time in Spain this year (we are the Australians who live near Alcaucin)so maybe can catch up one day?

Thanks again

Liz

Dear Liz,

You are most welcome! I am pleased it helped.

Definitely up for a glass of "fino" one day - a mini ST gathering in Andalucia!!!
