We spent 10 days in Madrid last year and loved it! We were staying with friends so no advice on accommodation, but in terms of day trips I can highly recommend Toledo and Segovia (to do on separate days).
I plan to post my trip report sometime soon
Cheers Christine

You'll love Madrid! My husband and I stayed at Hostal La Plata. Perfectly fine place and very reasonably priced. Walking distance to many spots, and a 1/2 block from a major subway stop. hostal-laplata.com
We took three day trips from Madrid--Toledo, Segovia, El Escorial. Segovia was by far our favorite, but we enjoyed them all.
My Spain experience is very old but I agree with the posters above regarding the day trips. We enjoyed all three trips mentioned.
I did a search on this forum and I could only find one thread discussing the Canary Islands. We did stay on Tenerife but we stayed up at the Parador on Teide. We did a couple of drives and I don't really visit any of the beach areas.
I did a quick google search and this Secret Tenerife has some interesting articles on things to do on Tenerife.
Have a great trip. Don't forget to tell us about the island when you return.
Best place to stay in Las Americas is the Los Cristianos end of town. Parque Santiago 1, 2, 3. Hotel Conquistador. Tenerife Princess. Vulcano. La Siesta. Bitacora. Parque Cristobal.
Madrid. Somewhere near a metro station which makes it easy getting around town.
