Hello everyone, I'll be travelling to Spain in early August and will start my trip in Barcelona. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for wine countries to visit while I'm there. I'm fairly new to Spanish wine and I really have no frame of reference on which to base my planning. I will be travelling to other parts of Spain after Barcelona and I'm not particularly looking only for wineries in the Barcelona area. Thanks for your help!
Hi there, The obvios is the northern part of Spain where you should try and get in a visit to the fabulous La Rioja region. Its divided into two parts, alta and baja (higher and lower. Two other adjopining regions are also worth a visit and are adjoining - Penedes and Navarra - both now producing exceptional wines. Not sure if you are travelling south but do near in mind Jerez de la Frontera where the best Jerez fino sherry is produced by the bucketload!! It is a great town to visit and you can ave guided tours of the sherry bodegas. Also the home of the "Real Escuela Andaluz" - the Spanish riding school who give spectacular displays of horsemanship. You will be spoilt for choice really, wine is produced in numerous areas of Spain - in fact almost all over the country. Also look into Valdepenas, Castellon Do toast all ST posters as you sip your glass of red wine!!! Cheers!
Hello: If you're heading to the northwest you may wish to explore (and taste)the wines of Bierzo. Villafranca is the centre. Only recently have the wines from this area been made available more widely in North America.
Then on to Galicia and the vineyards that produce Albirnino a crisp white wine ideal with seafood. Buen Viaje Dennis

We are in Cambados right now. It is the center of the Albernino region. We are in an internet cafe in the middle of all the tasting rooms in town. Plan to enjoy our evening at many of them. We will post later with our impressions. Day before yesterday we spent the day in the Toro wine region. We´re eating and drinking our way through Spain.

Well, a really good location could be Valencia - not far from Barcelona either and probably on the way as you are most likely to be going south. Valencian wines are little known but they are quite a world in itself, plenty of good wines of all kinds, competition winners etc. Have a look at the Wines of Valencia, there is plenty of information and suggestions.
Wine connosseurs find valencia a very pleasant surprise. Could be quite a nice off-the-beaten track wine trip for you.
