Shannon encourages me to start a new thread on this:
Anyone knows of a nice b&b or rental (just for a long weekend) in the old town of San Sebastian? There is only one ST hotel review, and it dates from 2003 !
Merci merci merci.

Have you looked at Trip Advisor for some reviews?

Me too AinP. Wink

I hope you get some responses. This thread, unfortunately only has some hotels on it.

Have you looked on the homelidays website yet? It looks like they have quite a few rentals in San Sebastian.

You may have to be like me - boldly going where no slowtraveler has gone before (and don't forget to report back.) Big Grin

Shannon,
Thanx for steering me to Homelidays. I finally booked this rental in the old town, which is just right for my hubby poo and me and his childhood friend. We will be there for a half-week stay.
-- Shannon, it seems you steer me somewhere, I steer you somewhere else. Slowtrav is such hopping fun !

Sweet! It looks cute and comfy, and the price looks right. And it's on the 5th floor so you will work off some of those pintxo calories. Big Grin

San Sebastian will likely be on the itinerary for our 2011 trip so this place could work for my mom and I too, if it works out for you.

In Paris we live on a 4th-floor walkup, so we are trained. I call it my in-house gym.
Snail1
Last time in Barcelona we had rented a 4th-floor walkup also, -- or so we thought…
Turned out to be 4th Spanish floor.
Which means 6th planet-earth floor.
What is 1st French floor was marked "Entresuelo".
What is 2nd French floor was marked "Principe".
By the time we got to 3rd floor, we saw it was marked 1st - a demoralizing sight indeed.
So our 4th floor was actually 6th.
But it did mean its terrace, where we dined every night, overlooked all the roofs of the Barrio Gotico.
The French owner of the San Sé rental assures us that this "5th floor" is "5th French floor". We'll see… Cool

Shannon,

Thanks again for steering us to the rental.
Just came back from 10 dream days.
We liked the San Sé rental, but it may not be for everyone.

Pros:
- It is located in the epicenter of pintxos bars of San Sé, which means pintxos epicenter of the world !
- Its location in the Parte Vieja means easy walks to both beaches and to the beautiful port. Our night walks to the port were absolutely intoxicating.
- The rental was kept spotlessly clean and is quite airy and luminous.

Cons
- The kitchen could be better equipped, with at least one good knife and one sink plug, but I think the owner thinks like you, Shannon, that one would not do much cooking there.
- 5th floor walkup. We did not mind and actually appreciated all the climbs and walks, anything that could help us walk off our pigouts !
- The food smells that waft through the apartment from the downstairs restaurant.

O I nearly forgot: The apartment is in the same building as the Bodegon Alejandro, where superchef Beresategui had apprenticed as a teenager in his parents' eatery. The menu is still supervised by The Big B, which means that among many fabulous movable feasts in Basque country in France and Spain in the last 10 days, we had our best meal there.
After our lunch at the Bodegon, we all forgave the food smell in the apartment…

Merci encore.
Es kerriko asko.
