Also, to say "I met my family in Italy for the first time," would I say "Ho incontrato mia famiglia in Italia per la prima volta."

Isn't it better to say ...
If you met them for a get together, then incontrare is appropriate.
As to my uncertainty above, I ask native speakers if "il familiare" is better???? Does it depend on the degree of relationship? To me my first and second cousins are famiglia!

Actually you can say "familiare", but PARENTI is better.

Whe you talk about your family fith other people yu use more often Parenti than Familiari.

I'm wondering if "ho fatto la conoscenza" would work better since you're expressing the fact that you have just recently made this acquaintance.

So, to say I fell in love with travelling would be "Mi sono innamorato con viaggiante?"

Thanks for all your help!

Mi sono innamorato del viaggio (lit. "with travel")
Mi sono innamorato dei viaggi (lit. "with travels")
"with the concept of travelling")

sorry, no better ideas at the moment!
