David from NYC was one of the first moderators on the Slow Travel Talk message board - back when it all began in June 2001. He "retired" for a couple of years, but now he is back to help us run the Language forums! Doru will also be running these forums.
Pauline, I think you should have made the Topic Heading on this thread "OLD Moderator David...."
Thanks everyone. Giulia, I know....! Doru, how did you get that pic of me? I thought I had exclusive rights on it! Jan, actually, this just came up - I didn't know last week!
Welcome back, David! Nice to have your experience to lean on...
"Words are the legs of the mind; they bear it about, carry it from point to point, bed it down at night, and keep it off the ground and out of the marsh and mists." ~ Richard Eder Brenda
Congrats David! I wasn't on ST when you were moderator, so I am especially glad you've returned. I am looking forward to your guidance in the language forums along with Doru. I am determined to improve my communication skills when I travel. I just think that it would enhance my experience more.

Trekcapri, for me, language is a huge part of what I enjoy about travel. I'm the one who's always lagging behind my friends because I've engaged some hotel clerk or resaurant owner in conversation about who knows what. But that's what SlowTrav is about, isn't it? Living in a different culture for a while in a way you don't normally live, and learning about the culture that way. If you're able to communicate in the local language, you connect with the culture on a deeper level. (Ok, end of lecture - can you tell that I'm becoming an academic? )
Anyway, if you have any specific language questions, don't hesitate to post on the appropriate forum. There are a slew of specialists who know a lot and are very helpful.
