I'd just skip the pesto to be sure, just like I always skip the chocolate to be sure. You never know.
I suggest that you write a note (or rather MANY notes) with the things you are allergic to
in Italian which you can give to the waiters who can then pass it on to the chefs.
Also, do some homework. Learn the basics about the Italian food, so you know what to avoid and not on beforehand.
I have to say though, that I have
never felt safer in a restaurant than I felt in Italy, thanks to the very understanding people around me, both American and Italian. I'm always more afraid in Swedish restaurant even though I can speak to them in my native language because there is generally less knowledge and understanding when it comes to food allergies and the danger involved. Brava Italia!
