to walnuts and pecans. Could someone please help with the translation for walnuts and pecans? Is "noci" walnuts? I can't seem to find "pecans" in my dictionary and when I check with an online translator it comes up as "pecans" so I'm not sure if that means it's the same in Italian as Engish.

I can eat any other kind of nuts except those two.....no pesto for me just in case Frown

Help!

Thanks,

Linda

Hi Linda,

I think "noci" is a word for "nuts" in general but don't take my word for it.

I'm afraid I don't know pecan or walnut in Italian, but thought you might find this thread from the expats in italy forum helpful for getting together something to say at restaurants.

I'm sure a native speaker will jump in to help with the vocabulary Smile

The Pecans are just "pecans". ^___^ Pesto is supposed to be made with pine nuts, occasionally though these are substituted with "anacardi" (can't remeber the English name right now, if you do fill up, please!) which are cheaper. So, just in case, ask for confirmation that there is abslutely no "noci" in the pesto, but to find any would be unusual.

I'd just skip the pesto to be sure, just like I always skip the chocolate to be sure. You never know.

I suggest that you write a note (or rather MANY notes) with the things you are allergic to in Italian which you can give to the waiters who can then pass it on to the chefs.

Also, do some homework. Learn the basics about the Italian food, so you know what to avoid and not on beforehand.

I have to say though, that I have never felt safer in a restaurant than I felt in Italy, thanks to the very understanding people around me, both American and Italian. I'm always more afraid in Swedish restaurant even though I can speak to them in my native language because there is generally less knowledge and understanding when it comes to food allergies and the danger involved. Brava Italia! Thumbs Up
