I used the eraser icon to edit a post of mine in the Italy forum, and got this error message:

I did the original post from home last night, and tried the correction from work this morning. I went ahead and made another post for this minor matter, but should it work this way?

Yes, that's the way it works. You are only permitted to make edits to your posts for a short time (I think it's an hour) after you first post. After that, you can either use the alert button to ask a moderator to make the change for you or you can do a new post.
