Dear all,

Does anyone know how I can resize all photos in the folder together? I got hundreds of photos, which are too large. It takes too much time to resize them one by one, that I just don't want to start doing that. Unfortunately...my computer is running out of memory.

I guess there should be some photo editing software out there, shouldn't it ?

Doesn't Adobe PhotoShop have a 'batch resizing' funtion?

Why do you want to resize them? It is much better to keep the full sized pictures as the archived version, and just resize any that you want to post online, send by email, etc. -- always as an extra copy, not to replace the original. You need the full sized version if you ever want to make prints, also in case you want to crop out a portion, etc.

If you don't have room on your computer for all your pictures, get an inexpensive hard drive for photo storage. Or if you can't afford that, just make backups on CD or DVD. Or, if you have a highspeed connection, there are web sites where you can store your photos, although I wouldn't want to do that for my only copy.

Roz makes some great points. I would not resize photos just to save disk space. I would get more disk space or move them to CD or DVD.

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements and it has a batch (automate) option. If you don't have software yet, you might look at a free option such as Irfanview which has been around for a long time and is popular.

Thanks,Barb.

Roz and Marta, I share the same views of you two. I always keep the original one and save the edited files( even with minor edits) as new files.

I just want to resize some of the select pictures and save them as new files in another folder for uploading to my online photo album.

Can I do this with Photoshop then? I am worried if it replaces all those original ones.

If you resize with PHotoshop yes, you will lose your originals, so make copies first!

In Photoshop Elements, it is not too hard to both resize and save as a new copy at the same time. The command is a bit different between the versions. I'm still back on old version 2.0. In this version you can find it on the File Menu > Batch Processing. On newer versions it may be File Menu > Process Multiple Files.

The dialog that comes up allows you to select a source folder, a destination folder, size, quality and custom name. Here is a Tutorial explaining the different options.

I usually want my landscape pictures 800x600 and my portrait pictures 600x800 so I usually copy the landscapes to one folder before processing and portrait pictures to another. I haven't figured out how to be smart enough for the batching to handle both. Maybe someone else knows.

Once I have my pictures split up, then I can use the batch processing to quickly resize photos and save to a different location for a web site.

Hi Bill and Marta,

Bill I suggest you use the free software that Marta's suggested, Irfanview. It can batch change all the photos in one go, and save the new ones to a different directory as well if you tell it to, so you won't loose your originals. If you want more info let me know. I have used the program for years and don't know a better one.

Marta, when you batch resize your photos in Irfanview, then under the "set new size" click "set both sides to" 800 width and 800 height, and you will get exactly what you want as it won't go over the maximum you have set. You will get 800x600 landscape and 600x800 portait without having to do them separately - give it a try.

Cheers, Graham.

Bill, I am using a software called "FinePix View", which is bundled with my digital camera. It could perform the task you mentioned ( resize and save as another file) and is very easy to use. Click here for more details of it

Hopefully u will be able to download one from the internet.

Cheers,
Michaelia
