I am looking for a lightweight rolling carryon suitcase that measures less than 22" in length by 14" by 9". or slightly smaller.

this is including ALL wheels and Handles in the measurements.

any suggestions? it is amazing how many suitcases go over these measurements when you include the wheels and handles.

we will be checking luggage as well. but take camera and birding equipment on the plane and need to guarantee ( as much as is possible) that carry on will not be checked.

thanks

I'm not 100% sure about the measurements and whether they include wheels and handles, but I've been eyeballing several bags by Eagle Creek. The Tarmac 22 looks good, and I'm intruigued the the Switchback Max 22 (I'm certainly not a backpack person but the presto change-o design is interesting) and the smaller, similar Tarmac Plus One. The Tarmac 22 has a lot of compartments which you might like for equipment. I don't mean to sound like an ad and no, I don't work for the company!

I prefer soft carry ons to hard because you never know when you'll have to have the bag under the seat in front of you. Underseat space never seems standardized, so what fits in one plane may not in the next.

I've been keeping my eyes out for a rolling carry on too and liked the Eagle Creek models I saw. I'd be sure to get one with a fabric panel on the back through which you slip the pull out handle of your checked baggage so it will stack easily when you have all your bags together. I've spent too much time and effort traveling with bags that don't fit together well - it can be a real pain in the neck! The Eagle Creek bags I saw last year had this panel. They cost more than some others but it looks like you get what you pay for.

I bought a new carryon a couple of months ago and I love it. Telescoping handle (the case has wheels) so I can pull it easily. Also has a strap if I choose to carry it. Fits under the seat in front of me and I can pull it out and put my feet on it if I need a little footstool so I get my thighs off the seat from time to time. It's from Travelsmith. Here's the site. Let me know what you think.

P.S. I recommended it to my sister and she bought one too. We're taking them to Italy with us next week.

I had bookmarked this thread from earlier this year. This E-Bags convertible backpack is NOT a roll-aboard, but might be worth considering - it is the measurements you want, and is very light.

The latest Consumer's Reports is suggesting the Delsey Helium Fusion 22274 as their top pick for a carry-on. I located one at Ebags for $70.

We bought the larger Delsey cases before we left New Zealand for our trip to the UK and love them - don't know the dimensions for the carry on bags though. They are tough and light weight.

Tidbit of info if you are thinking about the Delsey. After I posted the above entry, I received a $10 off coupon from Ebags. When I went to the link on the coupon the cost of the bag was $89. I then google the the Delsey carry-on and selected the Ebag's link. There the bag was 20% off and $71. I do not mean this as a negative to Ebags. I have dealt with them several times to my satisfaction, but there are several prices on their site. I bought at the cheaper priceSmile

Have you tried looking for briefcases with wheels rather than traditional carry on suitcases? I see lots of businesspeople traveling with them - they're smaller than carry on bags but plenty large enough to carry a laptop and lots of paper files.

Here's one example from the Staples website.

Would it be considered a carry-on or a personal item?
