I've done a number of searches, both on this site and through Google, looking for up to date information related to the e-passports now being issued.

The concern of friends of ours is that the chip imbedded in the passport can be scanned by unauthorized persons resulting in identity theft. Or worse. So far, all I have heard I consider hearsay and not fact, hence my search.

From what I have read on the internet so far I get the impression that the U.S. passport has some sort of shielding built into the passport cover that prevents the chip being read.

Any suggestions as to where to find current information regarding passport security?

David - I found this FAQ page on the US Dept. of State website.

The State Dept says that the chip only contains the information printed on the passport (name, date and place of birth, passport number and expiration date, digital photo). From this I gather that even if someone accesses it illegally, they do not gain the kind of information that run-of-the-mill identity thieves want (SSN, street address, employment and financial info). People who want stolen passport information could just as easily lift the physical item from your pocket or purse, couldn't they?

Or should I be more afraid of the e-info escaping?
