A German entrepreneur plans to launch the world's first smokers' airline next year, promising a return to the times before planes became smoke-free zones.
Alexander Schoppmann, a former stockbroker, is seeking the start-up cash for Smintair - Smoker's International Airways.

On its website Smintair promises to "bring back the exclusivity in flying encountered in the 1960s".

One can only hope that this idea will go up in smoke.

Yep, Diana had me in stitches. How do you say that auf Deutsch, Diana?

More seriously, changes in labour legislation in Germany or the target countries could make this smoky plane quite the can of worms. How's that for a mixed metaphor? Big Grin

Hi

I read about this in the paper. It is a bit against all other trends in our society but hey, if there is a demand then why not? I don't miss the old days when smoking was allowed on the planes so I will not be lining up to fly with this new airline Wink

There's plenty of publicity here about how companies have given a "quit smoking or lose your job" ultimatum to employees. Do you think that being a smoker will be required for pilots and crew of a smokers' airline? What happens to one's job if one quits, or if an employee's doctor says he/she must not work in a smoking environment? Will there be a separate section for cigar smokers? You know, not all cigarette smokers can stand the smell of pipes and cigars. I used to smoke myself, and I rode the Long Island Railroad in the days when there were smokers' cars - you couldn't breathe, you couldn't see - even smokers hated it, but hey, when the craving comes...

I would be pleased as punch to have all of the smokers on one airplane-- and myself on another! I just wish they'd do that with trains. I'm in California and I once got stuck on a local train for about 15 hours (yes, horror story), and one of the worst things was all the smokers-- going CRAZY because they couldn't light up!

Makes me think that maybe many of those uptight people who make scenes on airplanes are frustrated niccotine addicts. Smile
