After reading many posts we have switch to a Capital One card. Do I have to notify Capital One that we will be out of the country. (I tried to call but was put on hold for so long that I gave up)

I would call. They are pretty vigilent about security and if you don't call, the card will freeze after you buy your first piece of jewlery. Food, drink, and hotels don't usually activate the security issue.Punch the number to get a live operator and ask for security. Also be sure to get the phone number to call from Italy if in fact they are concerned about a purchase.

You should always notify all your credit card companies if you plan on using your cards overseas, so they don't suspect fraud and block use of the card.

BTW, for Capital One, they recommend calling their Fraud department directly: 800-427-9428. The hold time should not be as long as calling their regular number.

After my bank was acquired by Wells Fargo several years ago, I did try to notify them when I was going out of the country and they told me not to bother. I did have trouble with my Wells Fargo ATM card after 3 withdrwasl though, but when I contacted them after I got back, they told me that there was no reason why it shouldn't have worked.

In Feb 2007 I got an new Capital One credit card one week before I left for Italy. I charged at least 900 euros onto it with no problem at all. I did not call Capitol One before I left for Italy.

Charged at least that much on my Chase VISA card also with no problems. I didn't call them either.

Thanks for this number! Calling Capital One is still on my pre-trip 'to do' list.

I always call every credit card company that I intend to use or even might use. I also bring 2 ATM cards from different banks. I have had my account frozen before even though I had notified the company in advance. Better to be safe!
