I'm flying Lufthansa from LAX to Frankfurt, 18:40 departure and 14:15 arrival. Can anyone tell me what the service is like? Their web site only addresses business and first class. Do they still serve meals? drinks? gratis? Should I pack my own? Thanks in advance. Jim
I flew Lufthansa last April, from Toronto to Florence, via Frankfurt...the crew ran out of the chicken choice on the dinner menu about 1/4 of the way down the plane...the alternative was fish or fish!
Happy me that I'd packed a lot of snacks, plus juice and water! Lots of crabby others who just plain hated fish! Pack your own snacks, just in case and take your water bottles...I was so relieved that I did.
It was a night flight, with very crowded seating conditions, and although I'd been told by a real live person at Lufthansa, when I booked my ticket, that it would be the "most comfortable flight you'll ever have!" I was anything but comfortable. Having crabbed about this to you, I gotta tell you that lots of people love to fly with Lufthansa. I'm just no one of them. Buon viaggio! Wishing for you a dream of a flight and a fabulous time!

I was a very frequent flyer with Lufthansa for 9 years--and did the LAX-Frankfurt route many times. I know Brenda had a bad experience. I am sorry about that, because that is not the Lufthansa norm. Bad things do happen on every airline, and Lufthansa is as prone to bad things as many, but not as frequently. The standard on Lufthansa is normally higher than almost any other American or European carrier.
The food on many airlines is prepared by SkyChefs, the Lufthansa affiliate catering service. Food in general is good on LH. I always order asian vegetarian on flights, and normally get a rice curry with spinach or the like. THe special meals get served first, which is one of the reasons I order them.
LH's beverage service is very good, with a choice of wines and German beer, and often an Amaretto or Cognac afterwards.
Fully booked flights in coach are no fun on any airline, but in general, LH is a very good airline. I have come to that conclusion after many years of flying, and now being able to compare it with Delta in the past and Alitalia--which I fly more now out of necessity.
LH's biggest plus, overall (Brenda's flight notwithstanding) is its consistency of good quality service.
I have to agree with Diana here. My experience with Lufthansa has always been excellent. In fact they code share with Air Canada and if using Air Canada I always request the Lufthansa flight!
Travel from North America to Europe in coach is not a particularly pleasant experience on any airline these days .. but given my druthers I'd pick Lufthansa in a flash.

Diana and Sheena... That's good to hear, because I was so sadly disappointed with the whole experience on Lufthansa, after hearing such glowing reports from the booking agent and from so many other people. I was anticipating my flight so much, because of the many good things I'd heard about the airline.
On that flight, I heard a large number of complaints from many passengers seated in my vicinity, and for the most part, they were commenting on the lack of service and personal comfort on this particular flight...it seemed that they were used to much better than they were getting with Lufthansa, and were feeling as disappointed as I was.
My flight home was on Air Canada, and I was truly surprised how pleasant and comfortable it was...I'd gritted my teeth for the return flight, thinking that because I'd never flown overseas before, maybe I was just not used to the rigors and lack of comfort on overseas flights. I expected that I would be travelling home in the same kind of situation as I'd experienced the flight to Florence...nice surprise for me that I wasn't!
Hope your flight is perfection personified and everything goes well, Jim...I'm happy to hear from Diana and Sheena that my experience was out of the ordinary for an airline of Lufthansa's class!
