Please take this into consideration. If you and your companion are wearing these earphones, do the rest of us a (who are not) a favor and don't attempt a conversation. We do not enjoy listening to you yell at each other. Take them off if you want to talk to your neighbor and have some consideration. This is getting to be a problem as these headphones become more common.

I think this would apply to any 'contraption' you have in your ear - including the very popular iPod!
I am sure that that people wearing noise reducing headsets are no less considerate than iPod users, or those wearing the regular headsets provided on aircraft.

My husband and I use the Etymotic earphones when we fly. These are the kind that sit in the ear canal... and block everything. We love em!
We used to have a pair that just fit over your head and sat on the outer ear. They worked fine, but ran on batteries that needed to be replaced every couple of flights.
Oh... and we always take at least one earphone out if we are going to speak to eachother. Don't worry... we're not "that guy" sitting behind you on the plane.
Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip its been
We swear by our Bose noise cancelling headsets. We did not have them on our last flight, from LAX to Albuquerque (because we left them with Chris and Frank for their trip to England) and it made me realize how much noise there is on a plane!
They were expensive ($300 a set), but we have used them many times and loaned them out many times too. They now offer a smaller version that sit on your ear instead of cup it, but I think the technology is the same.
They run on one AAA battery and I take it out after each Europe trip and put a new one in before a trip.
(And, yes, we always take them off to talk to each other - who wouldn't? Now if you can just get the kids who sit behind me to stop kicking the seats....)

Yes that is what impressed me so much. When taking them off (to talk!) I was amazed by the noise level. I actually spent a couple of minutes doing the on/off thing - like a child with a new toy!

I hear ya, Pauline!...and while you're at it, would you please speak to the guy sitting behind me, who stands up to go to the washroom and uses the back of my seat for leverage...but also grabs a handful of my hair, because I'm leading back against the seat! Ow-ie!
A question about the Bose headphones...are they the large size? I'm going to buy something for this next trip, and the Etymotic ones look perfect, because they are tiny and easily packed away. How do they reduce the noise? Do they produce a white noise that camouflages the airplane noise?

The Bose are large - the cup covers your ear. They fold up flat in a carrycase. They are pretty light and you can just tuck the case in a suitcase pocket while traveling. I don't know how they work - but you can read more here:
Brenda, The Etymotic earphones are strictly mechanical. No white noise is produced. They have two soft, plasic barriers that create a seal in your ear.
It sounds weird, but I find them very comfortable, actually.
Here is the link to the manufacturer's web site. It explains the technology more.
