Live and learn...I just cancelled our apt we had booked in Paris and were notified that there are NO REFUNDS! I tell you when it rains it pours...
I was informed that there had been a word document sent to me in attachments with instructions for how to get in the apartment which I never saw. This morning I went back in my e-mail account and pulled up the attachment and its a blank page! The agent for the apartment says they will try to re-rent and as its high season it will probably rent but how do you trust that they will tell you its rented?
Anyway I e-mailed him back and told him that the document was blank and that I understood but if I would have seen such a document I would not have rented this unit. There are way too many apartments in Paris who have NO such policy...like I said live and learn...
We do have two unused airline tickets that we can use in the next year...we might go anyway...he said he should know if it rents by June or July...aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!
Yes it was the deposit which was half the rent so about $600!
ANYWAY UPDATE!!! I just heard back and due to our circumstances, recent death in family, tons of money spent, they have decided to refund us in full!
He did admit that the word attachment he sent me did not go thru as well..so we'll take it whatever the reason. I thanked him copiously and am very grateful...lesson learned always ask about cancellation policies especially as we booked this so far out.

When I had a death in the family, the owner/operator gave me a full refund even though it was only a couple of weeks before rent date.
But for future references, deposit usually means, well, deposit. If you don't show, you kiss your deposit goodbye. That is one of the constraints about rentals.
