Here is what we got to look at in the bathroom of a recent vacation rental in England (Jasmine Cottage, Windrush - Rural Retreats).
What do you think? - They had one sign at first, but someone still put "something" down that toilet, so they put up the second sign? - They thought two different formats would be best, so the renter could choose the straight forward message (with the threat of the "tradesman") or the pretty message with the cloud background? - The owner put up one sign, the housekeeper the other and neither wanted to remove the other? - One sign was not serious enough - but with two signs, the renters would be sure to obey?
1. If you cannot"...put ANYTHING other than toilet paper into the toilet." where do they instruct you to put the... product(s) of the reason for which you went to the toilet in first place?
But, Ah!, the second sign does instruct you to only "...dispose of the correct items...", so there; all bases covered! If one only knew what are these "correct items", the world would be again round...
2. To speculate on your question: maybe one of the signs has an English accent and the other a North American accent...
This was what I encountered while using a McDonald's restroom in China. There is a detailed cultural explanation for this, but I'll spare you the details!
I have to say, though, that if you've ever had plumbing problems because someone put inappropriate things down the toilet, you'd want to put a sign up, too. Of course, having the two signs is silly. But one tastefully designed and delicately worded sign could save alot of trouble with the plumbing.
