Hi, we are planning a one month trip trough switzerland and italy leaving Sept. 1, 2009. Have decided to purchase a 1 month eurail global saver pass which really seems to be the way to go. The question is has anyone used europrail.net to purchase their tickets? They are charging $31.00 USD less for the same ticket and I thought I'd ask for your input. thanks, Jim

My son purchased his rail pass from the Rick Steves web site. I'm not familiar with the europrail.net site, so I can't help you there.

We always purchase our tickets as we need them in Italy, haven't been to Switzerland.

Have you compared the price of the pass with the price of point-to-point tickets, and considered the surcharges you'll still need to pay with the pass? Look up the fares on the national rail sites, not a site like Rail Europe. As I understand it, with the pass you'll need to pay a €15 reservation fee for each Eurostar in Italy; the fare quoted on the Trenitalia site is the total you'd pay for regular tickets.

Andrew, thanks for the reply. Yes I have checked the individual train tickets and the pass would be a huge savings. You are correct regarding the high speed trains like the Eurostar. You actually get a discount with the pass but you do have to pay something. We are only considering using the Eurostar one time traveling from Locarno to Naples. For an hour longer train ride we could use the Global pass. We may take the longer ride, after all we are slow travelers. Jim
