I made reservations with Avis in March for a car pick-up in Las Vegas in July. I was quoted $199 for the days I would be there.

Since I did not have the flight/arrival info at the time of the reservation, I went into the Avis web site to enter that info today.

All was fine and dandy until I printed off my new confirmation and noticed that my rate was no longert $199....it was now $418.

After sitting on hold for 15 minutes, got an explanation that changing ANY info in an existing confirmation makes you subject to new rates?????

I now have to pay the increased cost and then file a claim with customer service to be reimbursed when I get home from the trip.

That's ridiculous. I would cancel my whole reservation and make a new one with a different car rental company.

I've seen that happen before - the system cancels and rebooks instead of modifying an existing reservation. It's worth a shot to call instead of making the change online, but sometimes the rental company's system does the same thing.

This happened to me a couple of months ago. I changed the time by just two hours and it changed the quote to about $40 more.

Can you cancel and start over on orbitz to see who has the best rate?

I've noticed that on the Dollar Rent a Car site, the time on the pull-down menu for time of pickup defaults to p.m. where it's a.m. on other sites. I've run into confusion there a couple of times before I figured it out, and I had a small rate increase when I fixed it before a rental, even though it didn't change the number of 24-hour periods in the rental.

www.questdex.com is the on line yellow pages for Las Vegas. Just click on the yellow pages link, type in car rental agencies, city is Las Vegas and you will get lots and lots and lots of car rental agencies. There are literally 20 pages worth of car rental agencies in Vegas. I know Comdex isn't in July so you can tank the Avis reservation and find one that will be a whole lot less than Avis. Everything from Ferraris to Fiats.
