Last summer they made me check my bag which was ok on dimensions but over the weight limit. I was early for check in. Later I saw people with carry-ons that were much bigger than mine and they looked heavy, but they were allowed to carry them on! Maybe it's the luck of the draw on which check in person you get. I would aim conservative with your carry on. I did have a fold up tote that I wisked out and put a few days necessities in and then checked my original carry on.

I only flew them once, when it was booked (and paid for) by someone else. I had a very close connection and didn't want to risk my bag not making it, so I packed everything in my carryon. The woman that checked me in was the nastiest person - she didn't measure or weigh my bag, but just insisted that I check it. I also had words with her about my connection. I had concerns that if there were long lines at passport control in Frankfurt, I would miss my connecting flight to Bologna. She said that I would pass through immmigration at my final destination. I replied that I would go through immigration at my first point of entry into the EU, which was Frankfurt. She insisted that I was wrong, and I still remember her words: "Why would you do it in Germany, you have nothing to do with Germany." You got that right, I thought. And of course I was right: I cleared passport control in Frankfurt and had to race like a marathon runner to catch my flight. I'll never fly LH again.

LH once rejected my carryon because it was 2 or 3 kg over. They were demanding that I check it. My wife and I repacked our bags at the gate, moving items from that bag to her bag, and we were able to board. Useless exercise.

I notice they are also very strict on the size of the bag. was that an issue? 8 x16- x21+. many bags are more than 8". we may be able to get free flights with miles. so they are an otpion for us. even if we pay our other choices are alitalia and airfrance. not exactly great airlines either.

JFK. I was flying to Bologna, connecting in Frankfurt. And I would fly Alitalia or Air France before flying Lufthansa again. If you get lucky and get an AZ or AF 777, they have individual seatback movie screens, which makes the trip go by faster. LH had the old fashioned single screen in the front of the cabin and they showed some stupid Lindsay Lohan movie. I was very glad I had my ipod with me. So, to recap my LH experience: Check-in agent was a Nazi Food sucked No entertainment Could not carry-on the bag that every other airline let me carry-on I repeat, I'll never fly them again.
