Several months ago DH and I booked nonrefundable roundtrip tickets on Delta from San Francisco to Budapest. Unfortunately, due to DH's health we are unable to make the trip.
Today we took a letter from his doctor to the Delta counter at SFO and received a full refund. We consider this very generous on Delta's part, especially in these days when airlines struggle and often seem to be at odds with passenger interests.
Of course, we wish we were taking the trip, but this response was greatly appreciated.
The usual disclaimers apply. We have no affilication with Delta other than being participants in its frequent flyer program.

Joan - what good news! It is too bad Fred's health issues precluded your making the trip - but how nice not to be out the $$$ you had invested in the tickets.
Nice to hear a GOOD airline story for a change.

In today's world, it is nice to hear an airline story that turns out well for the customer.
On the other hand, I am sorry to hear that you needed to cancel the trip due to illness. Please give Fred our best wishes; I hope he is feeling better soon.
In my limited experience, I have found most airlines very cooperative in refunding money for air tickets in cases of illness--both of travelers and/or family members. The important factor was having a note from the doctor explaining the situation.
We had to cancel a trip several years ago and Continental was quick to refund the monies even though I was only asking for a delay in using the ticket.
Just recently, clients flying on United had to cancel due to illness and CheapTickets.com was very proactive in helping process the necessary documentation to get a full refund.
