I was teaching high school math at the Hong Kong International School back then. Bit of a long commute. But we heard all about it and shared the music with one another.

Brad, you have no idea! Believe it or not, I still have my original pair of jeans turned cut-offs, covered with patchwork on top of patchwork. (no, I haven't worn them in many many many years) quote: Originally posted by Brad'll Do It: As I was a senior at the Air Force Academy, Woodstock was not an option... for reasons WAY too numerous to mention.
However, the concept of "free love" held some appeal for a young man at an all-male school, 3 miles from the nearest entrance gate
Brad....that explains a LOT too!

Oh, my gosh! I just came across this thread when looking at the latest list of "most active threads." I don't know how I missed it. Since I'm one of the older ST members, my history is a bit different. Not only would I have been old enough to go to Woodstock (though I didn't), but I was at the first Philadelphia Folk Festival in '61 - and a few others subsequently. In fact, I've explained to more than a few people over the years that I was (am?) more of a "folkie" than a hippie. I won't go into my history in the West Village in the late '50's and early '60's, though I have some strange beat-related stories, like the time Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, and -?- stopped by a friend's apartment while I was there. I did go to a few hootenannies during those years and began my decades' long admiration of one of my (and my husband's) biggest heroes - Pete Seeger. (I'm glad he's one of your idols also, Diva. Sorry you never made it to the Clearwater, but there's still time. A friend of ours, now deceased, used to go for a few weeks every summer.) I wanted to go to Newport several times, but never made it there either. My brother's best friend in high school, Paul Rothchild, was involved with Newport in its early years and later became the producer of the Doors. Unfortunately, he died too young! On the one hand, this all seems like many lives ago, but on the other, like it just happened. Perhaps it's because our tastes, sensibilities, and politics haven't changed all that much over the years. Ann

Hey, cool thread.........I missed Woodstock, as I, too, was on the West Coast as Robert and AnnieK mentioned. But Robert, I didn't see you at Altamont. I was there with my 6 week old son, having just moved down towards Santa Cruz from the Haight. Altamont was crazy and we didn't hear about the nasty goings on until we were home the next day. I did spend a lot of time in that era at the Filmore West and Avalon Ballroom. Don't ask me what we did besides hang with the best rock musicians around as my mother is still living and it might put her in her grave! So, time is marching on and on and boy do I feel dated.......thanks for the memories, everyone. Wouldn't trade that time for anything but wouldn't want to relive it, either. Ciao, Cheryl

I am quite envious of the lucky people that were actually there. I was about 10 years too young to be there, but I was there in spirit! I, too, had long, straight hair and I used to burn incense in my bedroom. My step-father used to think I was doing it to cover up the pot smell!!! LOL!!!

Cheryl, that WAS you at the Avalon! I went there every weekend, on hiatus from college, working a dead-end job in SF. Altamont was a really horrible day from start to finish, for me. But I had friends not more than 200 yards away who had the time of their lives. yrs, Robert

quote: Bringing in a couple of "keys"
Watching the documentary on French tv, I started wondering why the metric never took hold in the States, except as the weight unit of certain controlled substances, as cited by Arlo Guthrie. Chers, mods, feel free to take this out, although I am really talking about the progress of the metric.
