I'm starting to look at flights/prices for our trip back to the states in December. Right now I'm finding a price of $713 on Delta, with just one stop in Atlanta. Since we'll probably stay in the states longer than 30 days, I'm wondering if there's any point in waiting to see IF the prices drop later this month or early November. Art reminded me that most of the 'specials' we used to see weren't usually valid for stays over 30 days. Of course this year as the airlines make more cuts and add fuel (and other) surcharges, I realize it might be hard for anyone to make an educated guess!
Not sure if this will help or not, but we volunteer with a nonprofit ( Reach The World) and they are in the process now of buying us a ticket to come to NYC to meet the disadvantaged school kids that travel with us virtually.
We are traveling around Oct 25 from Malaga to NYC, and she said the prices dip much lower in November.
Not sure how it will work out for Italy, but thought it might help your decision.
We will be flying in U.S. less than 30 days ( will see family in Ca on our own while we are there).

I think that the 'price dip' that comes in November actually means 'sale' fares, and unless things have changedn most sale fares aren't good for stays of over 30 days.
I checked the USAir site to see their policy when prices dip after you've bought a ticket, and it's really simple! If the prices drop you can easily exchange your ticket, with only a minor processing fee of $150!!! (per ticket of course!)
