Pauline asked me to give some information about www.Flyertalk.com a travel message board that I'm a moderator at. I've been active at FT for the last 6 years. The site recently was purchased by the same firm that purchased Slow Talk. I guess that makes them siblings. FT was originally a message board for frequent travelers, mostly business travelers. While vacation travelers can get some great information there, the vast majority of active members travel extensively for business reasons. The board is broken down to many different forums. The airline and hotel chain forums give information on everything from getting miles/points to reviews. As you navigate the site you'll find that there is great information and value for anyone who travels. There is one forum "Omni" that you won't be able to post until you have been a member for a mointh and have made 100 posts. I generally stay away from that forum. It can be rough there with open discussions about politics, religion, etc. FT,on the whole, is not as "peaceful" as ST. Moderators suspend and ban posters weekly. With 650,000 threads, 7 million posts and over 130,000 members there's a continuing need for policing. I invite you to go there and check it out. If you have any questions, just let me know.

FlyerTalk is a great site...I've been a member for about a year..I joined when I was searching for information on the Varig debacle/bankruptcy and it was a great source of information (in fact, just about the only reliable source.) I've since discovered that there's a wealth of info on the site, not only about frequent flyer and mileage stuff but also general travel information, restaurants, hotels, etc.
A really good community although as Jim says, quite a bit larger than ST. It also helps if you know your airline codes and lingo, half the time in the airline threads I have no idea what people are talking about Seems that it attracts a lot of airline personnel as well as business travelers and they are often a great source of insider info.
I just started reading flyertalk last weekend! There is some pretty fascinating stuff over there. Over all I got the feeling that posters are pretty accepting of each other despite some very serious opinions. I read it for hours on Sunday, it is addicting!
Now I am more informed on what you should and shouldn't do when you are asked something weird by a customs guy, also I know that "Kip Hawley is an Idiot."
I sometimes have some really weird questions (like, has someone ever tried to put a mini of vodka in their quart sized zip lock?) so I am hesitant to post as a newbie, but one of these days I'll get my nerve up.

I'm sure other inquiring minds want to know the answer to this too!
Originally posted by t-mac: I've found useful info there but in general find it unfriendly -- nothing like SlowTalk.
At the same time, I can't help but point out that you all are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people I've ever communicated with on any message board. Almost seems unfair to make any comparisons in that context.
I joined FlyerTalk in 2003 and have found a goldmine of info there, especially in the American Airlines forum. True, the posters are not always the most polite, but then if I spent 100,000+ BIS (butt-in-seat) miles per year in an airplane, I might not feel too polite either! For those who stick to one airline and want to learn the ins and outs of the mileage program, FlyerTalk can't be beat. And after 100 posts, you're entitled to use the Coupon Connection Forum to trade all those goodies that the airlines, hotels, and car rental companies give you.
Aloha, Ann

My husband has long been a fan of Flyer Talk - he's a frequent long haul business traveller and has picked up all kinds of useful info - nice that there is something in common now about our respective favourite sites!,

I think the presence of airline personnel on Flyer Talk can be a double-edged sword. I was following the Northwest forum closely during the potential FA strike and it got so ugly (no surprise there). I did, however, learned a lot of US bankruptcy and labor contract laws.
