I didn't believe this when I read it on the internet so I went into my local bank to verify. Washington Mutual is offering a checking account free of service charges which also allows for free ATM withdrawals worldwide (though the ATM you're withdrawing from may charge a fee) and free wire transfers worldwide. I didn't check on the percentage they charge for currency converstion, but so far this looks like a great deal. I'm certainly using it to wire my deposit to Italy this week.

I checked with them a couple of months ago and I think then the conversion rate was 3%.
here's a bit about wire transfers ...*For wire transfers, non-refundable foreign currency exchange charges and intermediary and beneficiary bank fees may apply. For ATM usage, non-refundable ATM operator and foreign transaction and currency exchange fees may apply.....
Just be sure to ask for sure what the "fees are that may apply."

Keep us posted as to what your fees are. I am a Wamu customer and it used to be $40 + conversion rate to wire money. My understanding is you no longer have to pay $40 but I haven't wired since the new service has been available.
