Just received this notice regarding my United Mileage Plus account:

To ensure that Mileage Plus miles earned toward elite status and award travel on United are aligned with actual miles flown, we are revising our base accrual policy. Beginning July 1, 2008, for flights of less than 500 miles, passengers will earn redeemable miles equal to the actual miles flown.

Change effective July 1, 2008

I know--this is a bummer!! But, I guess such changes are to be expected. This will hit their business customers heavily and they are the ones they try to court. Ken used to do a lot of flights between San Diego and LA and SF for business and there are many like him.
