A couple of reasons to call and let your credit card company or bank know you're traveling:
1. They won't stop your card, thinking it may have been stolen
2. You can ask companies about their fees, so no surprises
3. When asking about fees last year, one company that wanted me to start using my card again offered me a great deal, including matching a competitor's lack of fees

We used this same chart from FlyerTalk and got an ATM card with no fees and a charge card with no fees. We just returned from Italy and were so pleased with having no additional fees.
