Hi everyone, I leave for Italy in a week and just realized last night that my passport, which I haven't used since 2000 for our honeymoon, has my maiden name on it. My ticket is in my married name and Delta won't change it, even for a correction. The woman I spoke to over the phone said they would not do it, but if I bring a certified copy of my marriage certificate, I should be fine.

Does anyone have experience with this? I searched the forums but couldn't find a discussion of this. Elsewhere on the internet, I have read that this will work. Just wanted to get another opinion as I do not want to spend my nine days of vacation in Atlanta! Thanks so much! I love this forum and I value your opinions.

you should be fine with a copy of your marriage certificate. This happened with my wife and I on our honeymoon and by luck she had a copy.

In order not to occur the expense and hassel of changing my passport, I also traveled to europe with a CERTIFIED copy of the mariage license with the new sur name.

You should be fine. Married name changes are not uncommon and honeymooners fly all the time with different surnames on tickets and passports. I did it.

However, I would suggest that you arrive at the airport even earlier than you normally would, in case they need extra time to check you in. If you get an inexperienced clerk who has to call in a supervisor for help, it could take a long, long time. That way your worst-case scenario is not missing your flight, but just having an extra hour to browse the airport shops.

Definitely bring a certified copy of the marriage license (not a photocopy). It wouldn't be the worst idea to have additional documents showing some combination of both your names like your drivers license, even a social security card. You shouldn't need them, but if the choice here is missing your flight versus having a couple of extra pieces of paper with you, I know what I'd do...

My passport is in my name from my first marriage but I sent it to the Passport Agency and they added an amendment to the back page and returned it so I didn't have to get a new one. You should do this when you return but it is little bit of a hassle because when the authorities check your passport and your name doesn't match you always have to remember to tell them to look at the back page. When I've forgotten to do this I always get suspicious stares. I'm due for a new one in May so it will no longer be an issue.

I would second Carole's advice about getting the amendment to the back page. As I hand my passport to the person at check-in I usually tell them to look at page 24, because otherwise, as Carole mentioned, they are confused by the discrepency in the name on the ticket and passport. It's never been a problem or a big deal.

I don't know where you live but i had this happen when i got married (a million moons ago ). I was able to go to Passport Agency in Los Angeles with our paperwork and get it added in one day. Not sure if you can do this. The only time i had any trouble was going into China from Hong Kong and they could not get IT to turn the page to the amendment. And of course no one spoke english ...but eventually they let me into China

Rules for getting a name change on a passport have been revised in recent years. They no longer issue the amendment. Now, you must apply for a new passport with the new name; if your current passport was issued less than a year ago, the new one is free, otherwise ordinary fees apply.

If you want to let the current one die a natural death, instead of spending $80+ prematurely, you could just use your prior name for plane tickets.

Thank you everyone for all the advice. I had researched getting it changed and even if I had the time, I only have maybe two years left on this passport and thought the fee was just too excessive if I could get away with it as is.

I have a certified copy of the marriage license, a cert. copy of my birth certificate and my drivers license showing my maiden and married names. I thought those should be sufficient. Not that I have much choice now! I wasn't going to bring the birth cert. but a friend went through this on the way to St. Barth's and said they kept asking for her birth certificate, so I thought, what the hell! What's one more piece of paper. As you say, if it makes the difference between getting on and not getting on, it's worth taking.

I will try to get there earlier than normal. Though I am cringing because I know we have a 7:35 a.m. flight out of Pisa to Paris. Yikes! I'm going to be sleeping in the airport...LOL

Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi!
I have the same problem!!My ticket is under my married name and my passport is under my maiden name. I booked my ticket at TACA.com and I've called them but they aren't really telling me much. My ticket is a Roundtrip from LAX to Lima,Peru. I don't know what to expect at either airport. I'm SOOOO lost!

On a light note, this is the first forum that has actually addressed the problem and a solution! thank you!
oh, and BTW, please let us know what happened at the airport!
thanks!
