I have a quadband GSM with an SFR sim card purchased in France. It has time left. We are going to Italy soon. Will this phone work in Italy.We are going to Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, etc. What will we need to do? Thank you ....

If it is unlocked, it will work in Italy, you just need to purchase an Italian SIM card for it, which you can do before you go to Italy, or when you get there.
You can also use it in Italy with your France SIM card, but will probably pay higher rates. Check with the cell company that the France SIM is for to see their rates when roaming. It might be a good way to use up the remaining minutes, then pickup an Italian SIM as Stella suggested.
I have spent hours on the net trying to find this information. You are wonderful. Next question... when we buy the Italy sim card will we get a new phone number?...and is there an advantage buying it here?

You can compare Italian (and any other) GSM networks here. Best to buy them in Italy. If you buy in a shop in europe have them install and test the SIM card before you leave. Remember, every european SIM card has its own number (they don't have number portability like the US.)
Also consider United Mobile which you can order in the states. It has (and continues) to work for me.

Your Italy SIM card will have its own phone number (the number is always attached to the card). If you are only going to be in Italy, that is the best option for you, but if you are going to be traveling to other countries, you might want to look at United Mobile.
The main reason for getting the SIM card ahead of time is just to save time and hassle after you get there. It will probably cost you a bit more than buying one in Italy. But since you have a card with time to use up, you might as well wait.
If you do decide to buy a card here, note that the Telestial SIM card for Italy is not available until after August 28. They recommend as an option the "Passport" card, but that appears to me more expensive than the United Mobile card. Telestial also sells the United Mobile card, but they charge more than buying it direct, and their web site says they are out of stock anyway.
