Here's a short video of The Lady Chablis being interviewed about Savannah and the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Karen found this little gem on MSN and sent it to me, after I returned from Savannah. It's a bit of a long commercial at the beginning, but persevere! Enjoy!
"Perhaps it was the magnificent oaks draped with Spanish moss, or the gracious wrought-iron-accented buildings, or the cobblestone walkways along the riverfront, but my first and lasting impression of Savannah was a sense of deja vu, like a vague distant memory evoked by some provocative fragrance. ~ Alice Ross Brenda
Well she didn't look stoned, but I'm sure from listening to Jeff that she very rarely, if ever, got up by 10 a.m.
I have to say, that this luncheon was my favorite extra-curricular activity at the GTG. And I think the food was way better than at Lady & Sons. The Pecan (pee can) chicken was outstanding as were the greens and sweet potatos.
Thanks Brenda for letting us be "in" on what was really happening in Savannah.
I, too loved this luncheon at the Pirate House for the discussion and the food "I had never tasted fried chicken with the pecan sauce"(whoa yummy!)and for the great company I shared. I especially enjoyed the time spent hearing Ginger's tales of passport travel woes and the kindness of strangers and of Mac's first travels in Europe. It was a slow and easy kind of lunch with lots of interesting table talk. I appreciated the time I got to spend with all my new found travel friends. Fascinating travel stories and wonderful opportunity to get to know you all a bit more. I hunger for that fried chicken again, but even more so for the delightful company! Love y'all. Barb Cabot

Ginger, I'm so happy you and Craig liked it! I've had such an amazing time visiting with Jean before the actual event, talking on the phone and e-mailing each other back and forth. She's such a darling woman and has been so kind to me.
She sent me a very lovely e-mail thanking us for the luscious gift from The Savannah Tea Room, and said that spot is her refuge when life gets too hectic...she goes there for a good pot of tea and a few sweets and all is well with her world after that. I'll post a photo below of our dessert tray from the Royal Afternoon Tea at the Savannah Tea Room...it was beyond yum.
Roz, It's so cool that you loved the lunch and visit with Jean and Jeff...they are such real people with no affectations. Simple, plain everyday folk...my kind of people! I would get together with them again, any time at all, wouldn't you?
Barb, A plate of that food? YUM-ilicious! I also enjoyed the lunch and thought the food was so good. Who'd have thought about pouring pee-can sauce on fried chicken? Mmmmmmmm! What a great visit we had with them. I'm delighted that you enjoyed it!
I was so enthralled with their stories that I only took a very few photos, I'm embarrassed totally to admit.
"What I want to know is, what is a white boy like you doing driving a big old brother's jive-ass heap like this sh*t here?" ~ The Lady Chablis, seeing John Cusack's 'new' car Brenda
What a hoot! I've beem to Savannah many times and that was the most fun lunch I have ever had. I have been regaling my friends with Jeff's (Geoff?) anecdotes.
The food was good, but the company was better!
Thank you so much for organizing it. We had a blast!

My goodness gracious, Roz... Thank you so much! I'd love it if you'd send me those photos, as I only have a few photos with me in 'em, like 3 or 4, and that's about it for photos of me in Savannah. So, any that you have would be most welcome. I have the one you sent me of us in the red caddy on my laptop as my screen saver...reminds me every moment of that wonderful afternoon. Now I can put these on as well!
Paulette, Thanks for the kind words. I'm so delighted that you loved it, because that was what I wanted for everyone who came to lunch with Jean and Jeff. I hoped to create a warm, funny, enjoyable few hours for you to hang out with some gracious and wonderful Savannahians...and that's what actually happened, I think. I'm so glad everyone loved it! It was fun, wasn't it?
Jeff lives in a huge and very gorgeous house overlooking Forsythe Park (poor little lamb! ) and was standing on the front porch when we went home past the house that day. He invited us in for a tour...oh, dear! I could live happily in one room of that beautiful old well-restored home. Jean tells me she could live on the front porch for the rest of her life, and I would agree with her! The owners have lived there for years. Niiiice!
"You listen to me. I'm in charge of this courtroom, not you. Here's the way it works: These lawyers are going to ask you questions...and you answer them. If I tell you to stop, you stop. If I tell you to sit, you sit. And I don't want you to communicate directly with that jury. Don't produce any more items. Don't show any photographs. Do you understand that?" ~ Judge White, giving directions to The Lady Chablis on the witness stand during the trial in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil Brenda
Brenda, I have a couple of great photos of you. If you'll PM me with your e-mail address, I'll send the to you. Unfortunately, I don't know how to post photos on this forum yet.
I've just watched the Lady Chablis video. I found it quite interesting and revealing. So, our tour driver was wrong in suggesting that you still might see him/her hanging around Clary's Cafe.
It's amazing how one book and one movie seem to have changed so many lives and a city so much. Or, would it be more correct to say one man and one murder - and then the book, etc.
I'm sorry I had a conflict when you met with Jean and Jeff. It sounds like y'all had such a good time!
Ann, Jeff Hall, our special guest at our lunch with Jean at the Pirate's House, was Lady Chablis' road tour manager for 5 years, and he told us that she doesn't live in Savannah any more. The fame from the movie was too much and left her with no privacy, so she's living elsewhere and comes back to Savannah occasionally.
Interesting person...I think she made the movie, was a runaway scene stealer and made me laugh out loud more than a few times.
One thought that kept coming back to me while in Savannah was this: I wonder what Jim Williams would think of the effect that his life...and his death...has had on this city that he adored.
"Savannah, that grand old lady with outer garments of wrought-iron lace and flowing tresses of Spanish moss, is a secret place no longer. And the muffled sound you hear emanating from Bonaventure Cemetery is Johnny Mercer's body spinning in its grave." ~ Stanley Booth, on the effect of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil on Savannah Brenda
Thank you so much, Ann! It takes some time to find the right one, but usually I just google "quotations Savannah Georgia" or whatever the subject of the post is. The toughest is to find direct quotes The Lady Chablis Deveau, so I ended up going to a website that has the script from the movie posted, reading thru' it and choosing the best lines from that site!
I'm delighted to know that you like the little quotes...I've used them for ages in articles, on my blog, on my business website, in my real estate ads...wherever I can squeeze them in.
