The Golf Outing

In April 2008 Historic Savannah will provide a rich and storied setting for The Great Slow Travel Gathering. The Gathering presents participants an opportunity to meet other Slow Travelers, swap tales of globetrotting adventure, and soak up the charm and historical richness of one of the South’s most identifiable cities. My husband, Brent Weaver, is an avid golfer, and thought that some Great Gathering participants may be interested in playing a round of golf at one of the Coastal Empire’s fantastic courses; Brent has volunteered to arrange this outing.

Overview

Brent is tentatively planning this golf outing for Saturday morning, April 5th to start around 8:30 am. This ps aroviden opportunity for all interested to get out and enjoy some of the low country’s fabulous spring weather during a time of no formally-scheduled Great Gathering events. The outing will conclude around 1:30 pm with ample time to relax back in Savannah or continue to explore the Historic District prior to shuttle departures for the 6 pm Fort Jackson dinner event. All Great Gathering attendees of every golf ability are welcome to participate.

Potential Venues

Brent has identified/researched numerous Savannah area golf courses which will meet the group’s requirements and are in reasonable proximity to Downtown Savannah. Links to the three ‘finalists’ along with brief descriptions, combined weekend greens/cart fees, and distance from the Savannah Historic District follow:

1. Southbridge GC: http://www.southbridgegc.com/ Southbridge has long been the most acclaimed golf course in Savannah, due to legendary golf architect Rees Jones’ strategic placement of water with a design set on a densely wooded tract. Large undulating greens are protected by grass mounds and finely sculptured bunkers, providing a fair test & entertaining round for players of all skill levels. ($49 – 9 mi)

2. Crosswinds GC: http://www.crosswindsgolfclub.com/page/125-3306.htm Crosswinds Golf Club stands ready to challenge your skills. Designed by owner Mike Kistler, our 18-hole, par-72 course opened in October 2000. “It has a parkland/links design,” Kistler says. “It’s a fun course for the high handicapper and a challenging one for the low handicapper.” On the front nine, you’ll find a parkland setting studded with trees. On the back nine, there is more of a links flavor. ($59.50 -16 mi)

3. Henderson GC: Henderson Golf Club - "The Place to Play Golf in Savannah, Georgia" Henderson Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course, playing up to 6,700 yards. The par 71 layout has all the characteristics of an old southern golf course. You’ll find the front nine holes open and rolling like a traditional links course, while the back nine offers tree-lined fairways in a natural setting. ($43 – 14 mi)

Transportation

The golf courses under consideration are all located within 15-20 minutes of the Historic District and Brent will have one vehicle capable of carrying him and three other golfers. Other participants with vehicles willing to transport golfers to the chosen course should indicate this in the info/interest form below. If the number of golfers grows larger than 12-16 golfers, then the other drivers and Brent can make multiple shuttle runs or we could look at renting an 18-passenger van for the day.

Equipment

Brent will bring his own clubs and one additional set for another golfer. All venues have rental clubs available. Recommend all golfers bring appropriate attire to include, collared golf shirt, golf shoes (soft spikes), glove, and headgear. Golfers may want to bring balls, tees and other items even if renting clubs at the course.

Format Options

We can play stroke play strictly for fun or use another format such as a best-ball scramble to allow for competition in a manner which is fair and fun for all golfers.

Since our Gathering weekend is now less than three months away, I thought I'd "bump" this thread about a Saturday morning golf outing, organized by Brent Weaver (husband of Leslie Erickson).

Brent would love to have others join him for a game of golf in this beautiful environment. This could be a great activity for anyone who would enjoy some physical exercise and a chance to spend time with a smaller group.

Post here or PM Leslie if you're interested!
