TOMORROW, we will be able to REGISTER for the Great Gathering in Savannah 2008!

Here is my "Top 10 List" of reasons to go to Savannah. (Check each day as the countdown continues!)

1. Come be a part of the LARGEST GTG in Slow Travel history! Meet other Slow Travelers, and see who you’ve been “talking to”, chatting with, and giving travel advice to! We are an AWESOME group! Come play with your old friends, new friends, and soon to be friends! Registration is TOMORROW!

2. We will wander wander with " Wet Willies"! WHAT?

With the open container law, we can wander down River Street while drinking these crazy drinks through a straw from a big plastic cup! They have one for spouses or friends who need an "Attitude Adjustment". Here is the menu of flavors:

Wet Willie's

Hmmmmm, I wonder how many of these it will take for me to get the Steering Committee to do a skit?

3.Get an authentic SLOWCHICK autograph!!! Someday these will be valuable…to someone, somewhere! Heck, after a few drinks, you could end up BEING a Slowchick!!!

4. “What’s cookin’ y’all?"
You can experience (or hear about) a group of foodie Slow Travelers descending en masse on Paula Deen’s restaurant, Lady & Sons. (an OPTIONAL activity)

5. April in Savannah: azaleas, magnolias, tulips, oh my! Walks along the river, twenty-one beautiful squares around the Historic Downtown area, fountains, artwork, parks and gardens with spring in bloom! Lots of places to walk, or even go for a romantic carriage ride!

6.Steve Cohen’s musical debut??? Yes, Steve of Pauline and Steve!!! (This has NOT been confirmed by the entertainment committee…just a rumor Palma started!)

7. Mint juleps, and southern fried chicken, and clams, scampi e polenta shrimp and grits, and ribs, and cornbread, and pralines, and peanut brittle, and biscuits, and pecan pie…YUM!

8. Meet multiple Moderators all in one location! (I SAID multiple Mods…not mods with Multiple personalities…) This could be the perfect opportunity to meet Mods from a different part of the country than where you live! Maybe we'll get a new group photo for the thread, "How Many Mods Have You Met?"

9. There is so much to see and do in Savannah! Shopping, cafes, tea rooms, jazz clubs, art galleries, and fabulous restaurants to try! All there for us in Savannah with it’s southern charm. I want to see the mansions, and haunted houses too! Anyone up for a midnight cemetery ghost tour?

(I once spent the night in a cemetery, but THAT is another story...)

10. Savannah is known as a “party town”. My favorite quote from John Berendt’s book, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” says a LOT about Savannah: “We have a saying: If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, ‘What’s your business?’ In Macon, they ask, ‘Where do you go to church?’ In Augusta they ask your grandmother’s maiden name. But in Savannah the first question people ask you is “What would you like to drink?””
It will be fun to watch all the Slow Travel folks party together in Savannah!

I love the humour in 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil'...you've taken my first favorite quote right outta my mouth, dollface!

Here's my next favorite, from Jim Williams ~
"I'm what they call "nouveau riche," but then, it's only the "riche" that counts. Nouveau riche is better than no riche at all!" Cool

I also love this conversation between John Kelso and Jim Williams, after seeing a man walk by with a dog leash in his hand...and no dog on the leash~

"I know I'm going to regret asking,
but that man said he was walking a dog...what dog?"

"Mr. Glover was the law firm porter. Mr. Bouhan said in his will that Mr. Glover should continue to be paid every week for walking Patrick, his Labrador."

"So...where's Patrick?"

"Patrick went on to his great reward, years after Mr. Bouhan."

"The dog's dead."

"Quite."

"Why doesn't Mr. Glover walk Uga, the team mascot?"

"Well, then, who'd walk Patrick?"Big Grin

I will absolutely sign up for a midnight cemetery tour - in a town like Savannah, there as to be one. On March 25, Palma said 2 days until sign-up for Savannah. Did I miss something?

After the GTG we just had in Palm Desert... I know the #1 reason to go to Savannah!

The chance to get to spend time with these special people. Friends we have found a connection with, that goes beyond geography- beyond travel.

I wouldn't miss it for anything! I hope you're coming too!

I couldn't agree more Sandi. ON the plane home today there were a couple of momments when I just burst out laughing remembering some of the comments form the weekend. What a riot!

I think that the guy beside me was a tad disconcerted though.

Until Savannah . . .

Hi Jerry,

Here's a comment that I heard at the dinner table this weekend ( Saturday night) - from Brad "Jerry is the perfect houseguest!"

I am sure that you heard that from the host and hostess but I thought I'd share that with you. I am just sorry that I did not have a chance to talk to you this weekend.. Hard to do with 48 guests!
