Most Slow Travelers seem to enjoy thinking about food, talking about food, and of course eating food. Some of us even photograph food! So I thought we'd take another countdown post to talk about food in Savannah and possibilities for eating out during the Gathering weekend.
Savannah offers some of the best dining in the South and a wide variety of options for every palate and budget. Some people may think that all there is to eat in Savannah is the high-calorie southern comfort food recently promoted by
Paula Deen. You can definitely find plenty of places to enjoy southern specialities like fried chicken, barbequed pork ribs, shrimp and grits, collard greens and fried okra. And since Savannah is less than 20 miles from the Atlantic coast, of course there are many restaurants specializing in seafood.
But eating out in Savannah offers so much more. You’ll also find ethnic and organic restaurants, simple bistros and sandwich shops, and fine dining establishments. You’ll have difficulty deciding where to eat for the meals you have available during your Gathering weekend… and this is one reason to consider extending your stay!
Have you seen our Gathering webpage on
Restaurants in Savannah? This page includes links to articles and websites with information and recommendations on restaurants. There are also several reviews written by our very own Jan (jgk), based on our visit to Savannah in January.
One restaurant I've really enjoyed in Savannah is The Olde Pink House on Reynolds Square in the Historic District. This restaurant occupies a beautiful 18th century building (yes, pink) with several small dining rooms and a tavern for more casual dining. The menu features low country specialities with a gourmet flair-- like black grouper stuffed with blue crab and drenched in Vidalia onion sauce, and grilled tenderloin of pork crusted with almonds and molasses. (During our "ghost tour" carriage ride a few months ago, our guide told us a ghost story about the building.)
Many restaurants and cafes feature outdoor dining, like the one below-- yes, possible even in January!
In the next Countdown post, we'll feature two long-time Savannah dining establishments: Clary's Cafe and Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room.
