Candy-lovers watch out! Along with New Orleans and Charleston, Savannah is one of the candy capitals of the south, famous for its candy kitchens and shops. The most popular treat is the homemade praline.
Pralines in the south are made with brown sugar, granulated sugar, cream, butter and pecans. Other ingredients like chocolate can also be added for special variations. You can watch the process in action at one of Savannah's candy kitchens. The ingredients are mixed in big metal vats, then spooned onto marble slabs to cool. The sweet aromas drift out into the streets, and if your timing is right, you may even get a free sample. You'll find a praline is gooey and sugary-sweet... a delicacy to be savored. At $2 apiece, you'll want to make them last!
Savannah has two major candy companies. In addition to pralines, you'll find taffy, chocolates, fudge, cookies and pies... treats to enjoy in Savannah or to take home as gifts.
