Located in the northwest corner of the Historic District, just a few blocks south of the river, City Market is one of Savannah’s major destinations for dining, shopping and entertainment.

There’s been a market here since 1755, and for 200 years this was the center of Savannah's commercial and social life... where farmers and fisherman sold fresh produce and fish and even barbers trimmed hair. In 1954 (before Savannah's focus on historic preservation), the old buildings were destroyed to make room for modern buildings and a parking garage. This controversial action eventually led to the formation of the Historical Savannah Foundation and the city's focus on saving-- not destroying-- its history.

Although the earlier buildings have been demolished, City Market has undergone a renaissance and still retains an old-style flavor. A pedestrian-only area, City Market covers four city blocks and includes mix of artist galleries and studios, restaurants and sidewalk cafés, retail shops, and jazz clubs. Many carriage tours also depart from City Market.

Yes, it's a tourist destination... but still worth a visit! Here's just a sample of what you'll find at City Market:
Artist galleries and studios

Savannah River Spice Company – a speciality emporium selling spices, herbs, blends and rubs, coffees and teas, oils and vinegars, and kitchen accessories

Savannah Candy Kitchen – homemade pralines and other sweets. And they give out free samples!

Vinnie Van Go Go's – a Savannah institution, serving great gooey pizza (by the pie or by the slice) in a very casual environment.

Cafe at City Market – a European-style bistro with indoor and outdoor seating serving lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.

We have spent many afternoons wandering around the City Market. It is a fun place! Kind of on the idea of Covent Gardens, or Thaniel Hall in Boston.

See you there!
