After reading the Countdown post about Tybee Island, Jan and I expressed interest in maybe having lunch and possibly do some exploring there on Saturday, April 5. Any one else interested, please come along! The more the merrier.

I just read Joy's trip report about her recent short trip to Savannah, including a meal at the Crab Shack. It sounds like she has a restaurant review coming on the Crab Shack too... and it doesn't sound like it will be that positive. They were there for a special meal and were disappointed.
I totally understand Joy's reaction. I wasn't sure how to say this really in the paragraph I wrote about the Crab Shack. It is not going to be the best seafood in Savannah. It's very informal. It isn't some very quaint, totally undiscovered place out in the marshes. But I still do love the ambiance and I like the informality, and the seafood is fine for me. I just want to be sure everyone knows what to expect. (Watch that Rachel Ray clip on their website.)
Roz, you would need a car to get there. (Or maybe a cab is possible, but it's several miles out.) I think our family would enjoy joining a group for a meal at the Crab Shack, but we probably won't go onto Tybee Island... too much else to do in Savannah! So if anyone would like a ride out to the Crab Shack and back, we would have room in our car for two or four more, depending on which vehicle we bring.
Just trolling through the web site would indicate that there is nothing quaint about the crab shack! LOL Jimmy Buffet, Hawaiian print shirts, lots of items for sale . . . clearly this place is a popular institution. My experience is that these places are special but for an different reason: the food wouldn't be cutting edge gourmet but passable to good food. I suspect that it isn't the food which draws the crowds but the experience.

I wanted to clear up some confusion about The Crab Shack.
The Crab Shack is on Tybee Island, but it's not on the beach. It's located at a fishing marina, on a creek, off the main road that leads to the Tybee Island oceanfront, 15 miles from Savannah. From the Crab Shack it's then a couple of miles to the lighthouse and the oceanfront beach. The first time we ate there, we had lunch and then drove on out to the lighthouse and the beach.
If you go back and read some of the posts in this thread (and look at the Crab Shack website), you'll get a good idea of what the place is and isn't. I've eaten there three times over the years, and I like it. It's laid-back and touristy, and I think it would be a fun place to go with friends. But the environment and food may not be for everyone.
Here's a list of restaurants on Tybee Island, several of which are at the oceanfront. Overall, Tybee Island is a pretty laid-back place.
The Crab Shack is located on Estill Hammock Road, near the top of the map on the big creek. Highway 80 then continues on to the oceanfront area and the beach.
Ken, Casey and I will join in on this as it sounds like it would be fun for Casey who might find much of the weekend "boring." We will have a car if anyone wants to hitch a ride.

Okay Sheena, Thanks for the link. Maybe someone can change the original post on this thread to April 5th then. The two lunches are on the same day.
Just to clear up any lingering confusion. We do mean Sat. the 5th. At the same time as the Lady and Sons lunch. You just can't do everything in one visit and for me--I really like to see the ocean.
June, that is my typo in that post. I meant to write Saturday April 5 instead of April 4. It's definitely a Saturday, and it's April 5. It is correct in the list of Extracurricular Activities in Savannah. Please refer to that for reference. I'll ask a mod if the typo can be corrected.
In the meanwhile, there will be lots of "group" activities going on that weekend, some will definitely overlap. All good choices, and maybe more to come.
It appears to me, from looking at the menus of restaurants on Tybee Island that Dewey's Dockside might offer better seafood dishes and a more laid-back atmosphere. Has anyone been there?
Honestly, you can't get more laid back then the Crab Shack. It is a Savannah/Tybee institution. The seafood is some of the freshest I have had and it is a really fun place to be. I go there everytime I am in Savannah because I know I will have a good time.
Steve and I would like to "play it by ear" We have a car and we may join you. We'll probably decide when we get there and know when you plan to go. So much to do! Linda
