Here is the link for some of my Savannah photos that I took today. It's a cold grey day so not much going on for tonal changes, and certainly no long shadows or shifts in colour from the sun, but still some ok pieces...enjoy!
I'm struggling with not being able to post most of the photos that I've resized. I keep getting an error notice and it asks me to contact an administrator...? I also need to know how to re-sort them in order of posting. Anyone know what I need to do?
"Perishability in a photograph is important in a picture. If a photograph looks perishable we say, "Gee, I'm glad I have that moment."" ~John Loengard, "Pictures Under Discussion" Brenda
Love your pictures!! I can hardly wait to get there with my camera. What a beautiful city! Oh do I wish, I had planned to stay a few days longer. sigh......
Brenda, What does the forcast look like? Have you seen the forcast in a paper or on tv? I am looking at 3 different web sites for weather, and all 3 are completly different...go figure!!! Just in a quandry as to what to pack, I know, layers, .
New photos up tonight! A gorgeous day today...hot and humid again, so pack your parkas and also your capris!
I spent quite a lot of time looking for a way to the riverfront and never found it! Talk about feeling like a tourist. Apparently, there is an access but I didn't know how to get there. Spent about an hour visiting the shops in the area and looking for a way to the river. Chiaro's kindly e-mailed me directions. There are quite a few vacant commercial spaces along the street that I was on by the river...interesting to see the city's dynamics change from block to block. Some areas are well maintained and others are not.
So, a little heads-up...the weather's back to warmer, actually warm and humid as anything, but the forecast for the next 4 days is rain. My ghosts don't care...they are going to get you, regardless! At least that's what they are telling me today. (voices in my head...does that mean there's something wrong with me?!?)
See you in a few days!
Rules For Living in Savannah: #5. Savannah summers: "It's not the heat, it's the humidity." Actually, moron, it's both. Brenda
Oh Brenda, I just love all of your photos. Thank you for bringing Savannah a little closer to all of us, as we pack and wait for our day of departure. .....See you real soon.
Thanks, Sandra... New photos of this glorious city are being posted as we speak!
"Here is a city whose people, rich and poor, are so steeped in good manners...in the smile, the soft word, the easy humor of the Old South...that truck drivers wave at pedestrians as they pass." ~ R.W. Apple Jr. Brenda
I've just been doodling through your pictures waiting for David to finish packing. We're almost off to the airport and I'm just too excited. Lovely pics, my azaleas are nowhere that pretty, and the wistaria, wow.
OK, turning off computer, packing it in bag, time to go - see you all tomorrow. And yes, I've packed way more than I need, perhaps that means I can stay longer ?
Hurry, y'all! Here's what's happening to my beloved azaleas as we speak...
And in the woods a fragrance rare Of wild azaleas fills the air, And richly tangled overhead We see their blossoms sweet and red. ~ Dora Read Goodale Brenda
I just came back from the Wine and Cheese at the home of the organizing committee in that gorgeous house on Washington Square! What an experience! I met people who I have only 'known' on the message board and I can tell you with all honesty, it is an amazing experience! Seeing faces and knowing only the names, then making the connection for each person is a really cool thing!
Here's a few little highlights: Went to the Savannah Tea Room this afternoon for lunch, and as I was finishing my soup, the darling blonde woman sitting at the fireplace came over to my table and asked, " Are you Brenda?" I looked at her and said, "Are you Jill?" We both were who we both thought the other person was. How cool is that?
As we were leaving the tea room, I heard a voice calling my name and it was Mac and Karen (Mac1947)! We sat with them for a few minutes and chatted, then found out that Nancy and John (NancyL) had just left a few minutes before that!
At the Washington Square house, a drunken brawl broke out and some chick named Kendall dumped a quart of red wine all over my $10,000 brand new white sequined jacket! ummmm, ok, then you don't believe that one? How about I hugged Kendall when I met her, gave her one of those rocking back and forth style of Canuck hugs, and I dumped a few teaspoons of her red wine onto my own $30.00 brand new white sequined jacket. The only part that's consistent is the sequined and the brand new part!
So, all in all, we're having a fantastic time and I'll do my best to post regularly, because I know how much I enjoy reading about other get-togethers. I'm not a taking-pictures-of-people person, so I'll leave that up to others to fill in those blanks with their photos.
Just for the record, our organizing committee rocks, supremely! They have done an amazing job of putting together the best bash this side of the post-Oscar parties! What a fantastic amount of work they did and how lovely it's turned out. So, a huge tip of my wine glass to Kathy, Jan, Sheena who we miss so much tonight, Leslie, Palma and Terry. Stellar party, girlfriends, stellar!
"And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter and the sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed." ~ Kahlil Gibran Brenda
The party's nearly over, and I'm not ready to come home yet. We celebrated our Friday night at the Gingerbread House with fabulous food, exceptionally good entertainment with Ginger (suncoast) serenading us with a beautiful melody, lots of prosecco, good conversation and a late night for everyone!
This morning, early...I made breakfast for everyone who came to Wendy's Pilates mat class. We rolled out on the floor in my living room, made space for each one of us and proceeded to s-t-r-e-t-c-h in places we didn't know we had muscles and tendons and ligaments. Felt great, Wendy's a gifted teacher and an excellent Pilates coach!
This afternoon, Michael, Jill and I met at the Savannah Tea Room for a final delicious meal there...Royal Afternoon High Tea with champagne for Jill and I, and flaming tea for Michael. Waddling home afterwards, we agreed it was a LOT of carbs and sugar and dairy. Tasted great going down but a little heavy for our poor tumtums.
The Old Savannah Trolley Company picked us up at 5:15 P.M. and delivered us to the Savannah History Museum for an evening of low country food and the best part...the ga-zillions of door prizes!
Luckily for me, my name was drawn for a copy of Chow! Venice by Shannon and Ruth. I now have my very own autographed copy, and no need to borrow chiaro's copy, like last time I went to Venice.
Luckily for Michael, he won a spot on any Tony da Roma tour with Three Millenium Tours in Rome!
Then, the long awaited ghost tour and it was a fun evening, with Omer driving us around to the haunted buildings in Savannah, giving us a lot of history and a little sass about the city's many ghosts and haunted sites.
Delivered to my front door at 11:30 P.M. by the trolley, I'm ready to fall into my bed, exhausted and happy. I'm NOT ready to leave for home on Monday morning early, however... there are places I want to see and things I want to do...must mean I have to come back another time!
Savannah's cast her golden spell over all of us, I am sure...because of the genteel and generous Savannahians, the food that never stops and the steamy sultry weather, I think I'm in love!
"Called "The Sweetheart of the South," Savannah has so much depth and three-dimensional appeal that "she" has been given a persona and described by "her" locals as a demure Southern belle with a vampish, dirty secret." ~ www.turnersouth.com Brenda
Hoo-hoo! Thanks, Eden! I had no idea...I'll go take a look. That's such an honour for me, because I don't think I'm a very good photographer, so wow!
I'm finally home, after a 21 hour marathon trip home, so I'm only stopping by on my way to bed to let everyone know that I posted my photos from our classic caddy tour on Sunday...we went to Bonaventure, among other gorgeous locations! I've also posted a few from Vic's on the River, Sunday brunch.
Now, I'm off to bed!
"Savannah's dead still have stories to tell. In Bonaventure Cemetery, their graves are windows to the city's past, offering history lessons carved in marble monuments and tabby crypts." ~ Bret Bell Here's the link for the rest of this article Brenda

Brenda, I couldn't find your photos of the Caddy tour, so I'm posting this one that I took just before you rolled away. (Unfortunately I zoomed in too far to show the tailfins -- that 1962 Caddy was a VERY long car.)

Brenda, Didn't anyone tell how I got drunk at brunch and fell into Mindy causing the fall that sprained her ankle?

If that's the case Kendall, then get in that Mustang of yours and hot tail it to Quincy, MA and take care of me!! It's times like this I wished I'd had kids. My cat Hank isn't very helpful. She just wants to walk on my sore foot.
Love all these pictures. I too am having serious Savannah GTG withdrawal pains.
I have completed my photo contributions to the 2008 Great Slow Travel Gathering photo category. Please let me know if I got anyone's name wrong or mislabeled anything.
My absolute favorite picture (that I took anyway) captures a few of the planning committee members finally having a moment to relax.

I would be there in a heartbeat, unfortunately it's one of the states I'm banned from until I get both anger mangement and aa programs finished. Georgia is now on that list. I'm still allowed in MS and parts of LA. By the way I got stuck in Atlanta and didn't get home until Monday.
