I'm not sure if we can create or own polls or not, but apparently when you click on the "New" icon, the ability to make a poll comes up. So let's see if this works and give it a try. If it doesn't, forgive me, my bad.
NOTE: POLL RESET - PLEASE VOTE AGAIN!!!

Mods - could this poll have been created under the Really Big GTG thread, and if so, maybe it could be moved to there? I didn't even think it could til after I created it. Sorry, and thanks.
Shannon - interest in DC starting growing after I made the poll - sorry! Why don't you (and anyone else interested in Washington) vote in the SE US section? Or can the poll be modified - mods???
No, Terry - you did great! Thanks for taking the initiative to post the poll. I added DC and northeastern US as options, but everything else looked good. Once we get some initial broad results, we can create further polls to narrow things down.
NOTE TO ALL: 9:21 AM POLL RESET - PLEASE VOTE AGAIN!!

Sorry, I was putting a poll together as this one was taking off! Thanks to the moderator locked mine. Hope there is a way to take it down completely.

Okay, I just voted. Can we explain answers here? I voted "I'll go anywhere," but that really isn't true. I wouldn't/couldn't go to Europe for this, unless I already happened to be there.
I think we should focus on an interesting North American location which will be easily accessible (transportation and cost) for the largest possible majority of people who are seriously interested.
I'm really not ready to vote on a specific place without more data about costs, transportation ease, and the home bases of the people who really want to be part of this.
I haven't voted yet - but feel I must point out tha NW Canada is not Jasper/ Banff.
Although not strictly correct, Seattle/Vancouver are generally accepted as Pacific Northwest but Jasper and Banff are on the other side of the rockies and not so simple for transportation - you would have to fly into Vancouver or Calgary. Still a great choice but shouldn't be lumped in with the coast.
Sorry to come in here late and pick - but I also agree with Kaydee. three choices might have been easier.
Terry you went to such a lot of effort - please don't take this as criticism of your work, just a desire to get this all important event right!

Just my 2 cents. We need to start somewhere, and getting the big picture seems like a good place. Perhaps there's more interest in a GTG in Italy or France than in a North America location. We won't know until we either rule them in or out with votes.
Kathy, I take your points, and perhaps we should have added a "not sure" button for location. I don't think it makes sense to edit this poll yet again, so perhaps people should vote for their second choice (since the poll makes you answer all questions), and the follow on planning can define locations further.
Sheena, thanks for the geographical clarification.
Maybe it's time for a "Who will help plan a Really Big GTG" thread.

Time of year and location are linked in my brain. January/February in Toronto would be too risky because of snow storms -- whereas March is much safer.
"Fall" is iffy in October (Canadian Thanksgiving weekend is the second weekend) and iffy in November (because of American thanksgiving which is in the third week).
Sorry I am not being very helpful here, but I found it difficult to respond to this poll.
Maybe if we picked a location, then we could decide on a timeframe -- or vice versa.
Also, it might help if there was agreement on a format of the event so that people could assess the costs.
For example:
-Arrive Friday -Friday evening: Meet and Greet and late night buffet dinner -Saturday day time: Do what you want -Saturday evening: Sit down dinner and Slow Talk entertainment -Sunday morning: Brunch (maybe optional for some?) -Depart Sunday, after noon
Costs (these would vary by individual): -Travel to get/from the location -Hotel (2 nights - could be several alternatives at different price points) -Breakfast Sat. -Lunch Sat.
Event costs: (Same price per person) -Fri. Meet and Greet and buffet dinner -Sat. Dinner -Sun. Brunch (optional)
I'm waiting to see what unfolds, and haven't voted yet, cause my answer really is "I'd go anywhere, just about anytime". OK, maybe snow in winter would be a problem for me...
I think this is a great start to narrow things down, but I agree that an important component is to have a local person in each location who is willing to scout out accomodations, prices, food costs, etc. Maybe this stuff could be done from a distance, but locals in each area may already know what's there.
Count me in for an overall planning committee. I will help in any way I can. And of COURSE, the Slowchicks will provide entertainment!(I presumptuously speak for my chickies...)
I voted, but not sure if I really could do this right, rather along the lines of Kaydee. I can pick a time of year, like spring '08 over a specific month, but as for destination, while I think a warmer climate might be better, i reallylike the idea of Canada. Marion has the right idea with a long weekend plan; some of us can only get away for that perioud during the school year, whether we teach or have children in school. A week is going to be too long for such a large group, at least for a first attempt of this kind of meeting. She's right to say think of this as a mini-conference - drinks on Friday night, a day of R&R somewhere gorgeous on Saturday and then brunch on Sunday. It's very exciting to see so much enthusiasm ut there in a few days.
Jan. Feb. March - I'd say somewhere warmer like Florida, California or Arizona. Fall - Washington, NYC, anywhere in Canada. I am planning a trip to Italy for Sept./Oct. 2008, so could go to one there. Maybe there could be a Europe one and a North American one, as well. Almost all of April and June are out for us. J.

I voted and we want to help in the planning. Personally, New Orleans sounds wonderful to us too. The Eastern Canada sites sound great since we always wanted to see more of Quebec, for example. Are there any ST folks in the New Orleans area who might want to help? I'm positive that New Orleans has a tourist and visitors bureau that would love to work with us, especially if we have a good size group. Dennis

I too like the idea of New Orleans! So i checked SE. I basically would attend as long as it is in the US. Our Europe trips revolve around our anniversary
Oh, I like the idea of New Orleans as we could help contribute to the economy and help with tourism there. It could even be good press for them! Slow Travelers from round the world coming together to support New Orleans. Nice...
