I just made our reservation at the Hampton Inn--Historic District on East Bay Street (there are two Hamptons in the historic district). Maybe someone will join us there. It looks very nice. We have a king bed with a sofa bed for Casey. Hot buffet breakfast in the AM, high-speed connection free in each room.

Is this the Hampton Inn we are talking about?
I love Hampton because they have both squishy pillows and large firm perfect pillows~ guess which I like! The Queen

Hi Sandi - that is the one we're in. We got a king room for $ 120 which was amazing. Now we have more 'trip money' for shopping and stuff!

Jerry, I just looked at the rates there and the best I could get with AAA was $139.50 during the week and $161 on weekends. How did you come up with $120?

See my post on "Dates are open on online booking sites." I got it at a AAA rate of $108. I guess it's called pricing based on the demand they've discovered.

I'll say .. . pretty amazing to see how far up the price has jumped in just a couple of weeks! I did book already at Staybridge, but I was curious to see how the Hampton Inn compared.

Roz - these are the rates posted on the website today:

145.00 USD* 1 KING BED NONSMOKING
150.00 USD* 1 KING BED WITH SOFABED NONSMOKING
155.00 USD* 2 DOUBLE BEDS NONSMOKING
150.00 USD* 2 DBL BEDS W/ REFRIGERATOR/ MICROWAVE NONSMOK
120.00 USD 1 DOUBLE BED NONSMOKING

I think I booked a double non smoking and not a king as indicated in the post above.

The total for three nights (Thursday - Sunday) plus taxes was $ 404.10

I don't have AAA so I can't check those rates.

Jerry,

Do you have CAA? Wouldn't they honor that card as if it were AAA? Just a thought.

Hi, Jane,

The Staybridge is just in the next block from the Hampton, and I like the looks of their rooms a little better, plus the special Slow Trav rate is a bit cheaper ($145 a night). But we will be close, so I'm sure we'll get to see all of you!

Did you not consider Staybridge because their suites don't have a couch / bed for Casey? They do have full kitchens -- I like having a fridge, even though I don't expect to do much cooking!

- Roz

P.S. The nights outside the weekend are not at the special Slow Trav rate, so I haven't booked anything other than Fri and Sat. I haven't decided yet exactly when we are coming, but if we come on Thursday, as I think we might, it would be $163 for that night (AAA rate).

When we stayed, at the Staybridge, Kathy slept on the sofa-bed and said it was quite comfortable. Confused
So I am sure their suite has third bed. Maybe Leslie can clear this up.

Hello Everyone!

There are two one-bedroom suites at Staybridge with a sofa-bed; but the suites are not part of our special rate.

The rooms that are included in our $145.00 SlowTrav rate are studio suites and come with either one king bed or two double beds. Ample room for 3-4 people. We have rented one of the two-bedded rooms with our daughter before.

Honestly, Staybridge Suites is a newer property and the rooms are not as "tired" as Hampton Historic which was built several years ago. It is still a nice property however, and I do not want to discourage people from staying there.

I had the privilege of being one of three people that scouted at least 10 or more places to stay in Savannah this past January. If anyone would like more info on a place they are considering staying, I would be more than happy to give it as would Kathy or Jan. Smile

The "scouting" party recommended the properties we thought that Slow Travelers would appreciate the most whether it be for historic charm, price, or a little of both.

Please do not hesitate to ask any additional questions you might have on hotels. I am also a former resident of Savannah and have spent a great deal of time in Historic district. Wink Grin

Have a great weekend all!!!! Big Grin

Leslie, do you know the new "historic" Doubletree at E. Bay St near W. Congress? I have enough Hilton Honors points to take care of our room. Is it close enough to the activities to consider?

Hello Nancy,

The Doubletree was one of few properties that we do not explore but did walk by and it is a very nice property and also relatively new to the historic district.

We based our accommodations on an East Bay grid locaction which you can see from this Google map that we set up here Savannah Google Map You can walk to everything in the historic district from the Doubletree, it is just a little further west than the other places. There is also a free shuttle that will take you around the district and that info is Savannah Shuttle

If you are looking for another good alternative to use your Hilton Honors points, this is a nice property and a little further East and closer to the area where many people will be staying Hilton Garden Inn

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Smile

All the Best,

Leslie

Hi, I was also looking at the Hampton. I am going alone, with the hope that someone will share a room with me. It seems like there are quite a few that have already booked their rooms. I just wondered, if the Hampton charges the entire room charge to your credit card now, or do they just hold the cc# til you check in.

I did notice at the Staybridge, that they donot refund you money, if you have to cancel, as they charge the entire amount when you make the reservation, from what I can see on their website. I am not to sure I want to get that locked in, this far in advance.

I could get a room for $144 for 2 double beds, with AARP discount at the Hampton.

In general the Hampton Inn just holds your credit card information as a guarantee in case you don't show, and charges you at the time of the stay. On Hilton family brands, there are some rates that require prepayment, but they make that clear on the site.

Hi Sandra, I was not charged for holding the reservation at Staybridge. When I called them I made it a point to ask if they wanted any money up front. Otherwise, I would have waited until fall. That's crazy to want it paid in full before hand. Eek
