I think you will enjoy your two weeks in the south Jill.

Do you have plans to tour any other states/cities besides Savannah? I highly recommend Charleston, SC both because of its proximity to Savannah and its wonderful charm.
Other great places to see are Asheville, NC and Nashville is a lot of fun as well.
(notice how I don't say Atlanta is a "must see" Big Grin)

All the Best,

Leslie

Hi Leslie,

Oh yes, Charleston is on the must-see list! Other than that, I haven't made any plans. I'll have to look into Asheville. I would like to tour a plantation...any recommendations? Smile

Jill,

In the Charleston area I recommend Middleton Place

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

Historic Charleston - A good resource for historic places in Charleston

I have been watching airfares all fall, LAX to Savannah (as has Palma), and I seriously do not think that they are going to go down. This morning David tells me he read something about the predicted increase in airplane fuel prices, so I think we will be making a decision sooner, rather than wait much longer.

Currently we can fly AA to Savannah from LA for $538 (we like to fly AA for miles, which then transfers into Italy trips), or to Jacksonville for either $318 or $378, depending on when we fly back. If you do the math, you can see where we are heading with this. It may very well be the red-eye Wednesday night to Miami and onto JAX, with a Sunday evening return JAX-MIA-LAX. Staying until Monday morning gives us the $318 price, but also means another hotel stay and missing another day of work.

Decisions, decisions . ..

Marcia, have you considered the LAX to Atlanta flight? Renting a car and sharing with another couple?
The link above compares flights. $370+

And Charleston from LAX is $348+...car rental and shorter drive.

June,

I have considered Atlanta, but from LA it means a stop at DFW then onto ATL (we did this once when we went to Alabama), and then a longer drive to Savannah than from JAX. For the same $$$ I can do the one stop, and have a shorter drive. But I am still looking and thinking.
Thanks for the advice.

We booked our flights yesterday, and I am very happy with our fare on Southwest! We are flying from Ontario, CA to JAX (with a stop in Vegas) for $371 per person!

Brad is a "Rapid Reward" member. It's not like FF miles, but after 8 trips, you get a free ticket anywhere they fly. We use them a lot to Oakland,(Thanksgiving), Seattle, and Vegas (January). That's how we got to the last Vancouver GTG, using free tickets to Seattle!

Those in the west might check it out. Savannah here we come! April Fool

Bought my ticket! $325 RT from New Orleans to Savannah on Air Tran. Continental and Delta (my FF programs) were well over $500. SW to Jax was a bit cheaper, but bad schedule, plus the car rental thing! I'll be working near NO that week, so no long drive to get there to catch the plane. Can't wait!

Nancy and Anne,

Glad to hear your plans are coming together!

Nancy, what did you end up booking? (Might be good information for others...)

Trust us to take a simple GTG trip and turn it into an extravaganza. First up, we want to visit our friends in the DC area afterwards for a few days. Then, our latest Elderhostel magazine (yes, we qualify!) showed a one-week Savannah Music Festival program for March 30 to April 4 so we decided to book that. It finishes at noon Friday so no conflict there, and we WILL find a way to get to the Thursday evening pre-GTG bash at some point.

I have not found "triangle" air fares much below $800 at reasonable times (we do not want to rent a car so no JAX) so my current plan is to use American Airlines miles. This involves flying Savannah to DC via Miami on Monday the 7th, but the other two legs look okay.

I booked Continental direct from Houston to Savannah for $396, non-stop. It was the most reasonable fare of the major airlines that I checked, although I didn't try AirTran.

I did see where orbitz is advertising round trip airfare from Atlanta to Savannah for 94$. It might help for those who are thinking about renting a car from the Atlanta airport or flying into Jacksonville and doing the same.
Either way~ we'll see y'all there!

Well, after reading about how oil prices are zooming up and will be affecting air fares, if they haven't already, I decided it was time to book a flight. The cheapest from Boston to Savannah is AirTran, and I booked round trip for Mike and me for a total of $595.20 including all fees (and the $20 AirTran add-on for reserving specific seats both ways).

Those were the cheapest advance fare prices ... although as I posted elsewhere, I actually ended up arriving a day earlier than I had planned to. So we are coming on Thursday and leaving on Monday. It actually was enough cheaper for both of us to come back Monday instead of Sunday to pay for another night at the hotel.

I see a few of us in Canada are using ff miles to get to Georgia.

And I've noticed that airlines up here are tacking on a fuel surcharge, as of last couple of weeks, after I had purchased my Italy flights.

Wonder if Jerry has his flights yet?

Nope - we haven't booked yet. The flights I have been tracking seem to fluctuate from $ 300 to $ 560! The planes diagrams are showing very few seats booked so I am hoping that the prices wil come down.

Well, Jerry, we are right where you are with plane reservations: watching the fares and the seat maps, LOL. Sometimes I tell David we will walking to Savannah if this continues. Like you, we are trying to keep the missed work days to a minimum and the airlines are not cooperating.

Maybe you should try Air Tran from Buffalo to Savannah. I just got a notification from them that it is $272 US + taxes = $318 for first week of April.

Leslie, am I reading the site correctly, or does it look to me like those fares are only good for travel through February 27, 2008?

Teaberry, you are reading the site correctly. The sale prices are up until Feb.08, but the price I posted for Buffalo to Savannah is a good regular price for April 3-6/08.

Hey, I did say they had a sale, however I did not say when the travel dates were. Sorry. However if you want to travel somewhere before February 27, 2008 you are in luck.

June, the price from Buffalo is good. The only problem is that we leave Buffalo at 6 am and then would miss the lunch on Sunday in Savannah! ARGH We may go air trans and then look at another airline back. The hunt continues.

Well, finally, we have booked our flights to Savannah. After weeks, months, of tracking fares, changing plans from SAV to Jacksonville, deciding to add another day to the trip, today we bit the bullet. It helped that we also found decent fares on AA ($157 each way, LAX-MIA-JAX, plus tax), taking a red-eye on Wednesday night and flying back on Monday.

But here's the funny thing - in the midst of booking, one of the legs jumped to $228, and David called AA to discuss this. The tech person did say that no fare was guaranteed until the booking process was complete, but when he explained how long we had been at this, she actually found us not only the original fare (of only two hours earlier), but actually it came down a few dollars. We have no idea how this happened, but I am quite pleased to have this in the can. And we are getting more FF miles, yay!.

Just one person's airfare story Roll Eyes.
