We are staying at the Harrington Hall Hotel in Kensington.

Are any of the pubs OPEN on CHRISTMAS DAY???

It really depends where you are going to be in London. There are so many good pubs that you are spoiled for choice.

Here is a link that lists all the best pubs throughout London with map references, openiong hours and info on kidsPubs.com.

My own favourites are The Flask in Highgate, the Dove on the river in Hammersmith, the Anchor down the other end of the river in Bankside, and the Spaniards Inn in Hampstead. These are all really old historic places that feel authentic and pubby rather than done up for tourists. But you will see that there are loads more to choose from.

in Knightsbridge, a couple of minutes walk down Brompton Road from Harrods (towards the Musuems), turn right onto Montpelier Street and there is a great little pub called the Tea Clipper. It's neither too small nor too big and they keep the music pretty low as well.

In the theatre district, you're spoilt for choice. One of funkier ones is the basement of Punch & Judy in Covent Garden; also Marquess of Gransby on Drury Lane.

My only few complaints are that it is becoming more dificult to find pubs that don't have the piped music turned up to shouting level by 7pm on weekends; and the smell of smoke will linger in your clothes as well. But overall, you can't beat a good one!

Enjoy.

Hi Andy,

During my research for my January 2003 London trip, I found the following websites that could help you research pubs in London:

www.pubs.com
www.fancyapint.com
www.londoneats.com (search for "pub/bar" in the "Type or Cuisine" box)
http://www.talkingcities.co.uk/london_pages/food_drink_main.htm

I printed off some lists from these sites to bring with me when I go. Happy Travels!

Not in Kensington, but not too far: in 1995 we were very fond of Chimes, which is still there (26 Churton Street, London, SW1V 2LP a few blocks behind Victoria Station).

Diary entries: Dec. 18 and 20, 1995.

Amusingly, someone else out there thought the entries still useful; other reviews of the place as well: Grubstreet: Chimes
