Hello...we are looking for budget accommodations in York fpr 4 nights in early September. We will not have a car. The best quotes I've received so far are from:

Acres Dene Guesthouse 87 Fulford road -- seems to be a bit out of town (south) but they say it's 10 minute walk to city center which would be fine

Bishopgarth Guesthouse 3 Southlands Road -- also a little south of town, probably similar distance (in slightly different direction) from Acres Dene -- also called a 10 minute walk

Number 34 B&B York 34 Bootham Crescent -- on north sides, seems most convenient

Does anyone have wisdom to share on any of these or other budget accommodations we could explore?

Thanks
Roberta

Roberta,

Have you checked Smoothhound? As mentioned here on a number of occasions, by me and others, it is a great resource, though it is wise to check out listings on other sites (here, TripAdvisor, etc.). Just go to the main site, click on York (twice), and you'll see a comprehensive list, with prices.

Many of the places listed have websites, usually with maps, so you can see where they are. There are reviews on Smoothhound, but they are rather hard to find, which is why I suggest you check for reviews elsewhere also. The star ratings are helpful, though.

How much were you hoping to spend?

Thank you...I have tried several of the review sites with results for these place but not Smoothhound. Will certainly give it a try. We were hoping for under $130 (equivalent) for a double. Of course we were initially hoping for even less but of course there is the reality of the value (using the term loosely) of the dollar. We are not looking for luxury and anything special, rather something clean, convenient and comfortable. thanks again

Roberta,

Since you won't have a car, I'd definitely check out the Bootham City Centre Guest House on the York (city) Smoothhound page. It is well located and appears to have good ratings, and, in this case, it does have guest reviews on their own page.

Ann, that one caught my eye too when I looked at the Smoothhound site. They did reply to my inquiry, are a little more expensive than several but look very nice. It good to have some reviews available. "Number 34", also on Bootham Crescent, seems to be somewhat less expensive but I have found no reviews, although it is a "sister" property to Queen Anne's for which I have found some positive reports.

Thanks again. I had looked at Slow Travel's hotel/B&B reviews and had searched the forum before I posted, but did not come up with Smoothhound -- I put it at the top of my bookmarks.

I second the Bootham Guest House. They were recommended to me and though they were booked solid for my trip, the owner was very kind and suggested other lodgings.
