I had forgotten that we have also rented cottages from the National Trust on 2 or 3 occasions in the past and they were always very satisfactory.

There is another organisation which may not be so well known, the Landmark Trust(please forgive me if everyone already knows about them). They have a portfolio of amazing restored buildings throughout the U.K. and Europe. We haven't used them, but know friends who have and they recommended them. I've certainly drooled over their catalogue. Their website is here.
