I need to make a call to the UK, but I'm a little confused as to how to do it.

I checked out the World Telephone Guide in the right margin, but now I feel even more confused. The phone number I wish to dial is in this configuration: xxxx-xxx-xxxx.

I see that the country code for UK is 44. So, if I make a call, do I dial 1-44-xxxx-xxx-xxxx?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Dial 0044 then the number. If it's an 020xx number, then leave off the first 0. What are the first four numbers? Many times you'll see the number listed as: +44(0)207xxxxx, meaning if you're dialing the 0044, then leave off the 0 in front of the 2.

The 1 in front of the entire number usually is used to signify dialing 00 in front of it, as in calling to the States (001 international dialing code). England is 0044.

Thanks for the quick answer, Maria. The first four digits are 0904.

So, just to make sure I'm understanding correctly:

0044-0904-xxx-xxxx. Sounds right?

Terry - lose the zero after the country code there, so dial 0044 904 etc. That is, if 0904 is an area code.

But is 0904 an area code? I just looked it up and 0904 numbers seem to be access numbers for cheap calls to faraway places but dialled from within the UK. It may not work at all out of the country.

Hmmm. Let me explain my situation.

I tried to order airline tickets yesterday from wizzair, for a round-trip flight from London to Zagreb, Croatia. I entered all of my information, but when I clicked the submit button, a communication error screen came up, with no explanation or forwarding contact. I looked for their phone # to try to contact Wizzair, and the 0904 phone number was at the bottom of their screen as a contact number. (0904-475-9500). This is why I posed the question about how to call UK in this post.

Now I'm thinking that maybe I did not submit my USA phone number correctly on their on-line form (perhaps that could be the cause of the communication error?) How would I enter a US phone number - 011-area code-xxx-xxxx?

OK, I figured it out! I DID enter the wrong USA country code when trying to buy the tickets. I resubmitted with 001 for USA, and I just purchased my tickets!

Thank you so much, Maria, felicity, and lesfaye, for your prompt and kindly assistance. Now onward with planning the trip.

For other numbers or countries, there's always this site:

I lived in USA for a few years and called UK often. Basically, according to what phone card or servcie I was using from the US, the number to call varied.
Sometimes I had to use 0044.... and sometimes 44.....

Terry,

I know you are ok now, but just to clarify for anyone else who reads this thread -

The "International dialling code" when calling from the US to other countries is "011." This differs from other countries. When calling the UK from the US, you would dial 011-44-(area code/exchange + number), but omit the "0" prefacing the equivalent of the "area code." So Terry, should you need to contact these folks, you would dial 011-44-904-475-9500, if dialling direct. Of course, if you are going through an intermediary long distance access number, and not dialling direct, the codes may vary.

The international dialling code from most/all of Europe (including the UK) is "00". So to call you, someone in the UK dials 00-1-999-555-1212. (Where "1" is the country code, and assuming that "999" is the area code, and "555-1212" is your phone number.)

You will frequently see phone numbers for companies that do a lot of international business written as +99-(0)888-777-6666. In this case, the "+" means "substitute the international dialling code for the country from where you are calling"; "99" is the country code; the (0) indicates to dial starting there if calling from within the same country, or to drop the zero if calling from another country; the "888" is the "area code" equivalent, and the "777-6666" is the phone number.

BTW, when calling Italy, you do NOT drop the "0" at the front of the area code. So when calling Naples from the US, you would dial 011-39-081-local number. ("081" is the "area code" for Naples, and you dial all three digits whether calling from within Italy, or from outside it.)

Clear as mud, now? Sorry if I'm over-analyzng, or repeating too much, but I know this is confusing for many, so hope this will help a few people sort this out.

No Kim. Perfect, just perfect. Because there is a different prefix of numbers when dialing TO UK and FROM UK, and to USA and from USA. Thanks for making it crystal clear - I've always been quite confused about that. I'm printing your explanation.

hi all!
i see some of you had a problem calling the wizzair call center in UK...well, that's my problem as well! i've tried to call it like you suggested: +44-904-475-9500, but unfortunatly without success. I am trying to call it from Serbia, and the code for dialing outside the country is 99, therefore the number in whole should be 99-44-904-475-9500, is that correct? please, help me with this, because I already purchased two tickets from budapest to london, and they sent me the invoice, but with the wrong name on it. I have been trying to call this number over and over again, and every time the machine explains that the number doesn't exist. Please, kindly, help me.

I am not familiar with Wizzair, but I checked their website and there are a number of options given for ringing the company. The number you quoted is for the UK office, but if you are flying from Budapest to London, I would be inclined to ring one of the other numbers listed in that link, Hungary or Budapest perhaps? The other choice might be to email them.

sanjab, I wish I could help you, but I never ended up having to call Wizzair. I had just entered my country code wrong when I entered my phone number. I think Beebee has some good advice.

thank you all for your kind replies, but i've already tried to call all of the numbers given at the site...and i mean all of the countries! neighter of them works. And it is clearly written that the respond to the email should be expected in about 2 weeks. Well, I have my itinerary, and i hope all will be fine...thank you again. Cheers!

sanjab, I'm so sorry you are having difficulties. I can imagine how anxious you are feeling. The only other thought I had was to suggest that you try to ring via an operator. All of the telephone numbers listed are premium lines so it's very strange that they are not working because the airline earns money everytime a customer rings them (I hate them Garlic Man)

Using an operator would increase the cost even further but ought to, at least, get through - or provide proof that their numbers didn't work which might be useful to you if you subsequently have to have an argument with them.

I think you can only ring premium lines if you are actually in the country of the premium line which makes it very difficult for people like you, sanjab. I must say reading this and then coming across the following extract in Wikipedia has really put me off flying with them...

From Wikipedia: " As a result of low cost, Wizz Air delivers much lower service quality than most air lines.

Wizz Air reportedly cancel flights shortly before departure. It is nearly impossible for customers to reach Wizz Air, and only by premium priced call centres.

Wizz Air announce it takes currently more than 30 days to process customer complaint mails."

I just hope it all goes well for you, sanjab!

For whatever it's worth, my RT flight from Gatwick to Zagreb and back was smooth, uneventful, friendly service, comfortable seating, and safe.

thank you, Felicity. And yes, since I am from another country there is no way for me to get through them. But, I hope for the best! I read a lot of bad critics about their service and cancellations of the scheduled flights, but that was after I bought the tickets Frown Still, I have couple of friends who have travelled with wizzair and had no problems.I hope that will be my case, as well. I kinda figured it out from forums, that those cancellations are mostly the flight routes not so popular yet, or from the countries newly put to the route. Since Budapest-London is a very common flight, I hope everything will go smoothly. I will come here to tell you all about it when I get back, hopefully Smile My best to you all, and have a nice and safe trips where ever you are traveling! Smile

Hello everybody, I had a same problem as some of you here. I need to call wizzair but my country Czech Republic was not listed in contacts on wizzair webpage and it was not possible to call premium rate numbers in other countries. I have sent an email to company which provide telephone services for wizzair if there is any possibility for me to call them and I got reply with this number +36 1 4709466 ... and it worked .. so maybe it will be usefull for somebody else Smile)
