Capianco, This list might help you. I am sure the Londoners amongst us will have some more specific recommendations. I think North End Road Market is really good value and has a variety of food - a lovely cheese stall but I am not sure he is there every day as I think he pops off to France for his supplies. There is also an excellent butcher in the road (not a stall). The whole place is very 'authentic' (rubbish and all) as it is not a market partly geared to tourists.

It's a shame you won't be here on the weekend as Borough market is so fantastic for food, but Felicity's list shows Leadenhall is good for food and it's open during the week. As it's close to City offices, the quality would likely be very good. It's been simply ages since I was there so can't say from personal experience. For artsy crafty things, the updated Spitalfields is definitely worth a visit. Plus Christ Church Spitalfield is beautiful and well worth a visit. I had to take my husband early one morning to the hospital near Smithfield Market recently and although I doubt you'd want to pick up any meat to take back, it was fascinating to see the meat packing and transport going on. Normally the area is dead when I'm there. If you don't mind getting up early it might be interesting. There's a Carluccio's caffè to have breakfast in around the corner. I used to really like Camden Passage for it's art deco jewellery, antique clothes and furniture but then I didn't go for ages and was disappointed when I was showing a friend around a few months ago. But the Islington area is great with shops along upper street with upmarket crafty stuff for sale and there is always Chapel Street market nearby.
