Several pages on the Cotswolds including: Introduction (where they are, what they are, history), Towns and Villages, Activities, Practical Tips (how to find the Waitrose), Guidebooks, Favorite Restaurants/Pubs/Tea Rooms, Resources. These are all my opinions on an area I love. I put the "According to Me" because some of my Italy notes (e.g. Driving) I wrote as if they were gospel and I get continuous comments on how wrong I am about things (e.g. Driving), so with this one I am saying right up front "these are my opinions only - your mileage may vary". (So, don't email me saying what an idiot I am to not like Northleach - I don't like Northleach, so there!)
Just kidding - please email me. If you find any errors or things that don't make sense, let me know. I want Steve to do a good edit and proofreading, but he is too busy right now.
This is delightful, thank you for posting! I am sorry the weather was so poor when you were here,it is now HOT and unpleasant unless you are on holiday. I must say I giggled a lot about Richard being a "garden expert" ha ha's yes, gardens and gardening NO!!!
I am pleased you enjoyed Russells, strictly speaking a restaurant with rooms. I'm sure I wrote my review for ST? The 3 new rooms are ready and I made an enquiry about a return visit in November,so I must get on book one of them. Good value I think compared to the cost of a "Rural Retreat" ?
I don't much care for Northleach either but do share your love of Burford. The church is exquisite.

Burford just delighted me on this trip! That is not my favorite corner of the Cotswolds - I think the western part is more pretty with more hills and forests - but Burford is a beautiful town! The way the main street goes down the hill to the river, the beautiful buildings lining the street - and the variety of them. The views out to the countryside. I probably like Stow or Chipping Campden better as "towns" - more restaurants, better delis, better tea rooms - but Burford is a delight of a day trip.
Plus, that memory of Burford from our 1988 trip. Unconciously I had been looking for that Cotswolds town on all our recent trips and it was such a nice feeling when we were walking through the town and I realized that this was the town I had visited in 1988!
Okay, maybe Richard is no garden expert, but he is married to one and that counts for something! He was very knowledgeable on the ha-ha!!
You wrote a hotel review for Russells; I looked it up when I was writing the notes. It is a great hotel.
I have a million more things to say about the Cotswolds, but have to leave these notes now and work on other things. But, I hope to get more photos posted and add to my walking/hiking page with the hikes we did this time.
On the recent trip I realized the importance of noting which hikes are very muddy!!
I loved reading both the good and the bad about the Cotswolds, and your photos were great. I dunno, but the food looks pretty good to me!
We are planning a family reunion in less than a couple years with my husband's brother and sister - we all love history and we all love taking walks. This area looks quite nice, and I will put it "on the drawing board" for us. Thanks for an honest, thorough, and useful review.
First, an aside: Pauline, I don't think you're an idiot, but I did like Northleach (twice), although I must admit it is not as picturesque as some other Cotswold villages. But at least you can park there!
Secondly, unless I overlooked it, your posted report does not give any recommendations for accommodations, so, if you will permit me, I'll offer onel. . We've stayed three times at a marvelous B & B between Broadway and Winchcombe: the Leasow House. The last time was two years ago, when we stayed a week. We just can't seem to stay away. They have their own Website, and Barbara and Gordon Meekings are wonderful hosts.
I'll try to get around to a review of the Leasow House soon. In the meantime, they have a wonderful Website, with guest reviews: http://www.leasow.co.uk/. (I'm not sure, though, whether this is their new one or their old one.)
Incidentally, the Tesco at Evesham is just outside the latter to the east on the road to Broadway, which I think is the A-44. Heading east, it is to the left of the first round-about going out of Evesham. We were there a few times two years ago, and it is quite adequate.
