We spent two months in a cottage in the Cotswolds last winter. I looked for vacation rentals that were suitable then contacted them and asked about a discount for off season and for longer term. One thing to keep in mind - Christmas and New Years is high season for countryside cottages. We started our rental after New Years. Another thing to remember - trains are very expensive in England. Check www.nationalrail.co.uk to look up train fares before selecting a place. If you want to be on a train line for going into London, Oxford or Bath would be good places to rent and both have a lot of vacation rentals. There are lots of good southern locations on the train line.
