Any ideas or website? We will be staying just for one night and want the West End...basic, cheap, clean just to sleep. When I say cheap I mean under 100 quid more like 60 would fantastic but is there such a place?

Will be coming up from Maidenhead to eat and shop and have a curry and want to do the Borough Market again...

Lesfaye - if you want only one night, check the Travelodge website. I put in a random date in September, and found rates ranging from 62 pounds for their Docklands location to 85 pounds for Waterloo or Covent Garden, to 97 pounds for Southwark. A few years ago when we only needed a one night stay we booked using their advance special rate at a location near Kings Cross for only 25 pounds! It was basic accomodation, but clean and a much larger room than your basic B&B.

Judy

Edited to add - Just looked at the link you provided. Let us know what the "catch" is, if there is one! Looking at the wording - wonder if the rate is £280 per week PLUS £40 per night -with a week minimum of £560. Hmm...guess I'm basically suspicious.

Lesfaye,
Please don't take this the wrong way: I know your plate is full these days, but whatever you choose this time, please read carefully the fine print on the reservation conditions and cancellation policies, etc., please, and don't jump on the first cheap option you see.

I have stayed at Seven Dials several times. The last time was in 2004 and the prices have gone up a bit, but you can still get a room for 95 pounds per night. The hotel is in Covent Garden and very close to the theater district.

The rate includes breakfast and there is a kettle to heat water for tea in the room. The rooms are very basic, but clean. I loved the location.

I looked up Seven Dials on Trip Advisor and here is the review.

It is very basic, but clean and perfect location.

I just thought this additional information might be helpful.

Charley and I stayed in the Seven Dials area for our honeymoon, just down the street from the Seven Dials hotel. I second Amica's comment that it is a great area-- very easy walk to Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Covent Gardens. When we're in London, we usually try to pass through Seven Dials... just a little walk down memory lane. This looks like a great budget possibility.

Amica, any chance we could get you to write a quick review for us?

See my review here in the London hotel review section of the Henley House Hotel in London.
It was 60 pounds a night, and right across the street from the Earls Court Tube station.

{edited to add link to the review}

I don’t want to hijack this thread, but did want to say your moderators have been doing some checking “behind the scenes”, and think there is a lesson to be learned from Lesfaye’s discovery of a “too good to be true” rental option, and her wise decision not to pursue it.
Our quick investigation has found the following:
  • The URL was only registered in January 2010, and the owner’s address is NOT in the UK.
  • A response to an inquiry shows they do not include any rental agreement, but want a deposit via wire or bank transfer ONLY, of a non-refundable 200 pound security deposit and a large percentage of the rent.
  • Googling the specific addresses of some of the properties brings up listings on several other websites showing much higher rental rates, and/or indications some are hotels rather than apartments.

All of which just means it is better to do your homework than to be sorry.

    kaydee -
I am somewhat hesitant to write a review of Seven Dials because I have not stayed there since June 2004. It continues to get similar reviews so I assume it is still okay. Should I write a quick review with a notation that I have not stayed there since 2004?

A couple of times we've had to find a hotel for 1 or 2 nights as a "stop-gap" (mix up with rental dates, or change of plans leaving us homeless) and have found the Ibis chain quite good. There are some very good prices on the web, and there are a few different locations in London, depending on what you want to do.

    Enjoy!

Amica, since it's been over five years since you stayed at Seven Dials, it probably doesn't make sense to submit a review now. But it's great that you've made others aware of this hotel in the forum. And lesfaye, if you end up staying there-- or wherever you end up staying, we'd love a current review! Smile

http://www.londonreservationhome.com/ Did anyone investigate any further into this compagny. They have absolutely numerous apartments for next to nothing on craigslist.com. Under subletting. I have ended up in the same situation. I have been overtravelling (is there such a word) and now we need a long weekend in London because our youngest grandchild is starting as an au-pair girl in Sheffield. And she wants the weekend to take place in London.

It sounds like it would be very risky to do business with this new company.

Sorry, I didn't see the result. Thought it could not be true. I am so sorry to se craigslist.com so misused. I am very fond of it. Have done a lot of homeexhanges through them over the years. And also rented private apartments. But it is becoming more and more difficult to seperate the genuine ones from the scams.
