We have managed to find and book places to stay in Italy within our budget (under 150 Euros/night for four people) by using Venere, but we are not having any luck finding something for the two nights we plan to spend near the Matterhorn.
We think that Monte Cervino/Cervina is the place we would try to stay as being the closest in we could get, does that right? We see some places in Zermatt but they are too expensive. Also we are guessing that is farther away (from the map).
We are hoping to get to go and walk around/hike and just enjoy the natural sights. (And we hope it's not too foggy to see the mountain!)
Can anyone recommend a technique for finding either a flat or two hotel rooms within our budget in this area? If we don't find something via the web/this group our next thought is to find a new copy of a travel book like Frommers/Fodors/Rick Steves.
Also, if you are familiar with this area, we'd like to simply hear your experiences.
Meg, It was many many years ago but we had a memorable few days in Cervinia, on the Italian side of the Matterhorn. We had been sweltering in Florence and decided, on a whim, to head for the hills. It was spectacular, beautiful weather, and cool. We took the cableway up to Plateau Rosa and got a high-altitude suntan, along with a few beers on the Swiss side and a good mountain lunch on the Italian side. The following day we hiked around the glacial lakes outside the town. The hotel where we stayed (Miravidi) required a 3-night minimum stay, as many places do in the mountains. But check out the web site for Cervinia: www.cervinia.it and see if there's something that might work for you. Great great place, and MUCH cheaper than Zermatt for sure!
